McMansions for the Homeless: Some LA Tents Are So Big They Have Showers, AC and Even Tiki Bars
While out in the car with my hot little honey, I tuned-in to KFI radio where the host was teasing an upcoming interview segment with veteran KNBC reporter Joel Grover. The topic: Incredible McMansion homeless tents right in SoCal, some so lavish they came equipped with tiki bars, air conditioning and large high-def flat screen TVs and gourmet kitchens. Immediately my out-of-control imagination went into overdrive, with visions of something out of a luxury African safari encampment and opulent beachfront tiki bars with scenic torches and fabulous sunsets. Since I was suffering a mild bout of writers block for my latest submission, I couldn't wait to see this expose.

Never underestimate a TV station's ability for hyperbole. Roughly thirty-seconds into the story it became obvious there would be no scenes of American celebrities or British royalty out in the Kenya savannah grasslands. No hot supermodels sipping Bordeaux wine in a huge tent, insulated from bothersome insects via nuclear netting. Nothing but the usual toothless, probably insane homeless living in the streets of Los Angeles. The only difference seemed to be their ability to stitch two tents together to form a couple more square feet of living space.

But wait! What of the amazing thatched depictions of homeless tiki bar construction? There is nothing my wife and I enjoy more on trips to Florida or the islands of the Caribbean than a romantic tiki restaurant or bar at sunset, with warm waters lapping on to the sand and (for me) the bar filled with sleek, tan women in sheer resort wear. Once again NBC disappointed viewers with what looked like a simple surfboard tossed on top of trash. Some tiki bar.
