OnlyFans, which has amassed a base of more than 130 million users largely for adult-oriented subscription fan pages, announced that it will ban sexually explicit content this fall.

The U.K.-based company said it is making the changes “to comply with the requests of our banking partners and payout providers,” in a statement provided to Variety.

Effective Oct. 1, 2021, “OnlyFans will prohibit the posting of any content containing sexually explicit conduct,” the company said in a statement. “In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines.”

According to OnlyFans, creators will continue to be allowed to post content containing nudity “as long as it is consistent with our Acceptable Use Policy.”

“We will be sharing more details in the coming days and we will actively support and guide our creators through this change in content guidelines,” the company said. “OnlyFans remains committed to the highest levels of safety and content moderation of any social platform. All creators are verified prior to being able to upload any content to OnlyFans, and all uploaded content is checked by automated systems and human moderators.”

OnlyFans earlier this week officially launched OFTV, a free streaming service that will not include any sexually explicit material. OFTV features original content from more than 100 OnlyFans creators, spanning fitness, cooking, comedy, health, music and more. OnlyFans soft-launched the on-demand streaming service earlier this year and now features a content library of over 800 videos.

Founded in 2016, OnlyFans says it has paid out more than $5 billion to creators worldwide. According to its terms, the company keeps 20% of revenue generated by its 2 million-plus creators. Because it has been a home to X-rated content, OnlyFans is not available on mobile app platforms including iOS and Android.

The most popular personalities with OnlyFans pages include Bhad Bhabie, Cardi B, Jordyn Woods, Bella Thorne, Tyga, Amber Rose, Blac Chyna, Rubi Rose, Tana Mongeau and Trey Songz.

This makes absolutely no sense considering most of the creators use OnlyFans to post sexually explicit acts. Wtf is this? I guess it was fun while it lasted...

Thank god. Hopefully they get replaced by a decent platform that cares about customers.

A platform that lets you see a preview of the product BEFORE you pay.

A platform that doesn't let people double charge you via surprise PPV paywalls.

A platform that at a minimum, has a review system so customers don't get ripped off.

A platform that lets users download the videos THEY PAID FOR.

This is the death of OF--it will never become Patreon. Good riddance.

What a stupid decision. OF has provided me with *exactly* the sort of porn I want to watch, and much more responsive and interactive than boring, tedious, predictable studio stuff.

J4F must be rubbing its hands (and other parts) in glee at the riches it's about to receive.

It was never a very good platform, anyway. Unwieldy, slow and at times awkward to navigate and riddled with technical issues; felt like using an unfinished model.

This is where that Rhys fella (the one with the tattoos and the nice willy and bum) stands to gain big-time on the back of onlyfans's droves of fleeing customers; didn't he have his own state-of-the-art xxx platform in development?

This is the article from The Guardian about the same story, which reminded me about the "great purge" from PornHub etc, which was essentially done to placate the card companies and payment processors.

If you want to call it a "war against porn" you can (I won't go that far personally). There certainly seems to be a turning tide.

OnlyFans, the subscriber-only website synonymous with pornography, has announced it will ban adult material from the site after pressure from its payment processors.

The company will continue to allow some posts containing nudity but “any content containing sexually-explicit conduct” will be banned, with the site instead focusing on more mainstream content.

The London-headquartered outlet has exploded in popularity during lockdown, bringing in billions of pounds of revenue as more than 130 million users signed up to subscribe to content or pay to chat with “creators”. Although OnlyFans insists it has a wide range of people creating material for the site, ranging from chefs to yoga instructors, by far the most popular content on the site is pornography.

OnlyFans said the ban, which will come into effect in October, followed pressure from banks and payment processors who raised concerns about the material it hosts. Rather than lose its ability to take payments, which would effectively kill the business altogether, OnlyFans has instead chosen to ban the adult material that made its name.

“In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines,” said a spokesperson for the site.

Payment processing companies increasingly control what material pornography sites are able to host. Last December, Visa and Mastercard briefly banned payments to websites owned by online pornography giant MindGeek, following reports it was hosting “revenge porn” uploaded without the consent of those involved. The financial businesses only backtracked when MindGeek deleted tens of millions of unverified videos from its sites such as PornHub.

OnlyFans has enabled tens of thousands of sex workers to earn substantial incomes in return for handing over 20% of their earnings to the company, with many creators saying it has given them financial freedom. Internal figures obtained by Axios suggest about 16,000 creators earn at least $50,000 (£36,000) annually from the site.

However, it is has also faced growing political and regulatory scrutiny over its ability to remove illegal and exploitative material. Earlier this month more than a hundred US congressmen and women demanded a department of justice investigation into OnlyFans, relating to the alleged presence of underage material on the site.

Such issues have scared off potential investors in the company and driven it towards seeking a more mainstream business model similar to other crowdfunding sites such as Patreon, while removing the sex workers who built its audience.

An OnlyFans spokesperson said: “We will be sharing more details in the coming days, and we will actively support and guide our creators through this change in content guidelines.

“OnlyFans remains committed to the highest levels of safety and content moderation of any social platform. All creators are verified prior to being able to upload any content to OnlyFans, and all uploaded content is checked by automated systems and human moderators.”

Even as the audience for online pornography continues to grow, mainstream internet companies have increasingly distanced themselves from adult material. In 2018 it was banned by Tumblr, while Facebook and Instagram also have bans on explicit content. Twitter is now one of the few leading social media platforms that continues to allow pornography.

The company was founded in 2016 by the Essex-based Stokely family who continue to be the public faces of the business and continue to extract substantial sums from the company. However, corporate filings show that it is now entirely owned by US-based online pornography veteran Leonid Radvinsky, who keeps a low profile.

I'll post this link to a Twitter thread which people might find interesting:

https://twitter.com/PostCultRev/status/1428584131835748359

And here are some quotes from that thread:

A lot of people are getting the OnlyFans story wrong, and the reality of it is a lot more damaging and concerning to both the livelihood of sex workers and online freedom in general.

OnlyFans isn’t ditching porn and sex workers because it’s trying to get new investments. It’s ditching them because on October 1st of 2021 MasterCard is implementing new rules governing sites with adult content that use their payment processing systems.

These rules will basically require that OnlyFans (and every other site that accepts MasterCard payments) not only fully verify every user and every person who appears in every adult video, but review all posted content before publication, including real-time review of livestreams

So why the rule changes? Because last December the New York Times published an opinion piece by Nick Kristof caller “The Children of Pornhub” that accused the site and its parent company of profiting off revenge porn, child porn and sex trafficking.

PornHub has since moved to a model where it only posts verified users, but the big payment processors haven’t relented, and are looking to remove themselves from any other business that might be involved in sex trafficking, non-consensual content, etc. Hence the rule changes.

One of the primary sources in Kristof’s article is Traffickinghub founder Laila Mickelwait. She also works for the group Exodus Cry, a Christian group that is among other things anti-sex, anti-homosexuality and, naturally, anti-semitic.

Groups like this don’t care about sex trafficking or non-consensual videos on a porn site. Those are footholds to their broader goal, with is to destroy the entire sex industry. That the majority of it is legal and consensual is pointless; they want it all gone on principle.

The attack on PornHub did nothing to stop sex trafficking and a lot to take money out of the legal porn industry. The new MasterCard rules are a direct result of this, which basically means an overwrought Christian anti-sex fever dream is now dictating sexual content online.

Almost the entire anti-trafficking movement is an Evangelical project to get liberal supporters to sign off on a laundry list of Christian anti-sex policies. It’s been one of their most successful propaganda projects. It’s also likely gotten a lot of sex workers killed.

Oh well, we're going back to the good ol' days of big studio porn then. Better save all the amateur porn fast, just like how they nuke the entire section of amateur porns in PH. :dizzy:

They should've ditched MasterCard and accept Crypto instead.

Not enough people know how to mine Crypto
Not enough people have the computer technology good enough to, even if they knew how.
Not that many people *want to* mine Crypto.

The intrinsic value of Crypto is so unpredictable (and untrustworthy) that OF would be on a fool's errand to exclude 90% of its customer base for a handful of tech-savvy investors. It's not feasible.

People can buy Crypto easily. You don't need to mine to have crypto.

A lot of sites accept it nowadays, even Mindgeek sites or Just4Fans.
