Ah, but your guard was up because it was down...

Your first trip to the bath house was productive; sure you'll get there soon! :)

I guess that makes sense :)

I am going back Friday I think. I will keep a journal for a few more visits.

Any difference in my attitude should be quite obvious, even if it has happened to slip my mind!

I'm visiting the desert in S CA and enjoying a state of the art aquatic center. Adequate but sparse locker room but then again I'm spoiled. There are gang showers and 2 stalls for disabled with a bench and curtain and 2 stalls for anyone. I've gone everyday for the past week and use the gang shower. There's only been one time when another man was in the shower at the same time. What I've found repeatedly disturbing is the young men who don't shower and universally do the towel dance when changing clothes. Today the changing area bench was full and a life guard went into the disabled toilet stall to change. Who teaches young men this ridiculous behavior? The other men have all changed w/o concern about nudity but not the younger guys. At my home gym in Colorado everyone hangs naked and uses all areas of the locker room naked and conversation abounds regardless of clothing or nudity.

In the gym in my junior high, there was one big shower area with perhaps seven shower heads. The shower head on the end had a small thin wall separating it ever so slightly from the rest. There was also a separate single stall available in an adjacent locker room.

I knew I could have used either one of those to get some privacy when feeling anxious about my boy-cock. But I also knew that would have showed off my insecurities so much to the other guys. I felt I could only live with myself if I showered as everyone else, in the open, with my tiny hairless package för all to see.

Perhaps that's a reason I never got bullied too much. It didn't seem to bother me.

Maybe the reason for younger guys being less willing to change and shower openly is the proliferation of phone cams. A few years ago the chance of being photographed or videod naked and being uploaded to a website was pretty remote. Now everyone has the capability and there are loads of sites where those vids are broadcast to the whole world. Older guys are probably less aware that this is a possibility.

or, they just don't care. Believe me, once you get to a certain age, you really don't care who is looking at you, and are thankful if someone is.

...It must be very uncomfortable to be so uptight :frown1:

Uptight, I am not. However, judgmental you are. Standing around naked with other guys pondering the meaning of life is not my idea of a good time. If that's your deal though, let your freak flag fly. WORD.

In my mind, the open or closed showers aren't the point, but instead gym etiquette. In what other walk of life does anyone think its appropriate to stand around naked having a conversation about the weather? Regardless of your point view on this subject, I don't think anyone can say that such a practice is common or has any prayer of becoming so.

You take a shower, dry off and get dressed. That's all. Crazy.

Sorry, the above sounded pretty judgemental to me, hence my response.

If that was not your intention, my apologies

My gym has open showers... Shame the talent isn't the best! Nice to parade around though

Is it in London? If so, am guessing its a leisure centre gym? The like of Virgin Active and Fitness First have gone over the top with frosted glass shower stalls!

Had an interesting discussion with a younger adult the other day. He sees any display of masculinity as "gay". Straight men don't wear fancy underwear, that is for gays. Straight men don't shower naked, that is for gays, straight men don't walk naked in locker room that is "so gay".

So in essence, it appears that it is really a fear to be seen as gay that pushes the younger generation to avoid showing their genitals or sexy underwear in locker rooms and showers.

It would be interesting to make a corrolation to see if towel dancers tend to wear boring underwear (loose boxers, white tighty whities, loose boxer briefs) while those who are not affraid to shower naked wear sexier underwear.

I think your young friend may be... so gay.

As I've said before, I went to a public pool that trained Olympic swimmers and none went in the locker room! They did the towel dance outside in the open.

Yes. One of the reasons that I selected my gym is the open showers. To me, it is inherently masculine for guys to being comfortable enough with their own bodies to be freely naked with other men. I find that in open shower gyms, the lack of modesty tends to extend to the whole locker room, so it's fully acceptable, for example, to walk naked to the scale, etc.

Me too. I find that gyms with open showers attract more relaxed and friendlier members, while gyms with shower stalls attract the exact opposite.

I did not play sports in high school or college and had just a couple of close male friends, so I didn't see that many guys naked nor did anyone see me naked unless it was a quick moment or we were having sex. I joined a gym in my mid 20s and it turned out to have open showers. I typically went in the mornings before work but it was literally around the corner from my house, so I would just go home and clean up. One day I made up my mind to take a shower there. This place was pretty casual and I had seen the exactly same dozen or so men for months working out, so it wasn't too scary to get naked and clean up. The majority of guys didn't even put a towel on to walk there and one regularly brushed his teeth and shaved his face nude by the sink afterwards (that was a stretch for me). One guy I had chatted with big time even said "nice of you to join us in here" or something along that line. My current gym has shower stalls and it is rare anyone gets naked freely for more than two seconds, except for me and maybe one other older guy.
