Has it ever been non-verbally, or verbally communicated to you that you were not welcomed in a public space meant to be open, and accommodate all persons? I will share the non-verbal, and verbal communications I have experienced, and I request others do the same. We can ultimately create a repository of these behaviours, and communications and devise a way to counter them.

What is he doing here? He shouldn't be here. He doesn't belong. Ask him what he's doing here? He has no business saying anything to anyone. He's s bad person, watch him. He's not from here, he better go back to where he's from. There is something suspicious about him. Did you notice any aggressive behaviour? Don't talk about anything around him. Look at him, look at him and tell me if does anything. Write down what he says. Record what he says. Take his picture. Check you watch when you see him, make a note of it when you are safe, and then compile a journal. When see him walking into a store, run into the store before him, so that it looks like he is following you. Try to get his attention when he is driving by pulling up next to vehicle.

I was refused service and asked to leave a restaurant because I was in uniform. Even after explaining that I was a firefighter and not a police I was still asked to leave and told “we don’t serve uniforms here“.

@Cooper72

How was it explained to you what your uniform represents? Why was it necessary to refuse service on that basis?

Is there a negatve history between the organization the uniform is representative of, and the specific restaurant? If so, what is it?

It was a young adult male. Just asked me to leave and that they don’t serve uniforms there. I didn’t want to cause more of a scene than he already was so I politely excused myself.

it was a fast food place and wasn’t in the city I work in so I can’t see how it would have been an issue with my department.

In my case I interacted with a few key organizations who deputized public service provider's to conduct surveillance of me, and engage me so as to provoke a response which could be characterized as threatening, and aggressive. This would serve as a basis for heightened surveillance of me in store, in transit, in residence, and at myriad facillities. It would also serve as a reason to alert corporate security departments to observe my daily activities to compile a dossier which results in me being barred.

@Cooper72

Generally people have more positive experiences with fire departments, than police departments. Fd's enter to rescue, save your house,are medics to physically treat those in distress. It would be interesting to have his personal reasoning, or the business policy behind the refusal articulated.

I had been there before in uniform without an issue but had never seen this kid before that day. I haven’t been back nor have I heard any other people having issues there. Maybe the kid was having a bad day and he felt like taking it out on me.

When I say you're allowing your personal bias to influence the quality of service you provide, or refuse to accept a refusal, and insist on the same service-they say "he has no right to say anything". When I retort, if it is justified for you to do it to me arbitrarily, than it will be justified for it to be done to you-they say "he has no right". I will treat you, and regard you as you have me. Expect me to also ask "What is she doing here?", "She is suspicious, take her picture".

Don't say my name around him. Talk about something else when you see him. Ignore him, don't be courteous, he will leave. It isn't excuse me, say move because he ain't shit.

Mame, you offered the 10 customers in front of me a 25% discount for the inconvenience, but not me. Why? You aren't our usual customer. What brings you here anyway?

Yeah @Calboner that hand gesture is a very overt way of saying "everyone else is welcomed in the tree house, but not you". If you experienced the persona non grata treatment was it subtle, or overt? Was it verbal, or non-verbal?
I just thought people might appreciate the cartoon.

I bet you they would totally welcome you if you showed up to help put out the fire that was burning down their house.

For the most part, I stay out of the political and socially sensitive discussions on the site. I will say that things are just off the rail this year. When a person is affiliated with or works in a profession that requires them to put on a uniform, they are still an individual. Every occupational field will have some type of bad people, and in some cases... REALLY bad people in it. It's just unfortunate that the bad behavior of that subset causes backlash on the others who are truly decent and great individuals. Just my 2 cents!

I've been asked to leave places, here in Europe. I don't look like people from the place where I live and the difference isn't appreciated by many.

I prefer when they just ask me to leave than when they follow me around until I get it, or tell me unfriendly things to make me leave.

I've also had little pebbles (really tiny, no physical hurt) thrown at me.

I've also suffered discrimination in other continents.

For instance, in Morocco, I suffered discrimination because I'm not Muslim. In many countries, because I'm not a man.

Sometimes I suffer discrimination because I'm older.

When I was a child, at the country where I used to live, in another continent, I suffered a lot of bullying and discrimination, because of my accent and the place where I was born.

I also suffer discrimination because I don't drink alcohol, nor do drugs.

The list is long.

I've even dealt with it for being perceived as a slut.

I will have more replies to your post. But, to me you are like a mutant X-Man(forgive a little, i'm tipsy), you will never be accepted until those like us build their own community.

I don't need to be accepted by everybody.

I think people have the right to dislike something about me.
