Try nearly 200 years of military intervention. The British fought the first Afghan war starting around 1839 at the behest of the East India Co. who were keen on getting into the opium trade and wanted their boy back on the throne.

I was being conservative. Winston Churchill was on campaign there in the late 19th century, though he frequently got the army's back up because he wrote about all their cock-ups. Nothing changed about that either.
