They're the first in the nation to do so. I think it's ideologically contrary to freedom and will ultimately hurt owners and renters alike. This is another form of fascist governance.

Opinion | Oregon, the Rent Control State

Overselling it, aren't you?

I actually don't like rent control, but to call it fascism is just silly. It isn't fascism, just bad policy.

Yeah, it isn't fascism.

Jesus Christ. You can make a lot of good arguments against rent control. But just calling it fascist is stupid.

Fred's is just an especially poorly executed version of the narrative of some on the right that dictionaries should be thrown in the trash and declare fascism, communism, and socialism to all be the same system of government. Yes, it is imbecilic.

Rent control IS consistent with fascist, economic policy. Here is another link for your consideration.

Those ideologies are very similar and generally oppose free-market capitalism, which is why few nations adopt those failed policies. Even the Chinese gave up on communism and have embraced some aspects of capitalism. However, they too tell private industry what to if and when it suits them. It's certainly totalitarian and fascistic, but doesn't fit the definition of communist or socialist practices.

I didn't say Oregon is fascist. I said that rent control is consistent with fascist economic policy.

Incidentally, the author has it wrong, at least if we're going by Benito Mussolini's definition and explanation of fascism. In the aforementioned link written in part by Mussolini, there is no mention of race. The author is confusing fascism with Nazism.

You used a dictionary definition. Don't you know that the poorly educated, orange nosed "conservatives" consider the dictionary a collection of lies. Only their definition is correct.

How about Benito Mussolini's definition of fascism? Should one accept his definition or defer to another's definition?

Rhetorical question: Does one typically accept North Korea's description of themself as a Democratic Republic (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) or does one accept others' description (dictatorship)?

While you are welcome to give deference to things Benito Mussolini has said, the publicly accepted definition remains what it is.

Considering that this law does not transfer power from the legislative and judicial branches in Oregon to a totalitarian executive branch, it's not fascism.

Mussolini is the founder of fascism. If one is reading definitions of fascism, his is the first that should be read. It's sort of like how if one wants to study Marxism, they should start with Karl Marx.

I've read a lot of everything. Some people who try and define and discuss fascism have apparently never read any of Mussolini's writings.

I don't have to read Mussolini's musings to know what he has done any more than I need to read Charles Manson's writings to know what he has done.

Mussolini is judged for his actions, not for his writing. The definition of fascism is based upon the actions that he took in the restructuring of Italy's government and what he did with it.

Defend Mussolini all you like. I still don't know what's gone wrong in your life to produce such a hateful individual.
