We really aren't ready for Brokeback just as we were not ready for Do The Right Thing when it came out. I mean, Crash essentially slaps you in the face the same way.

Clooney's speech fucking ROCKED.

Dilznick-I think that a lot of people are unnecessarily hypersensitive about BBM. I mean, if you did not like it becasue you thought the pacing was slow or whatever--I mean everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. I have disliked many "great movies" over the years. The flip side of that argument is that many people have seemed to dislike or dismiss it based soley on subject matter.

Sorceror--Resse Witherspoon's Oscar is trash. Her husband, however is a Fucking STUD. WOOF~!! And her costar, that Pheonix guy--yeah, he's kinda smoking hot too!!

People who say this movie is trash based on the homosexual content are just as idiotic as those who praise it for the very same thing.

Hi,

I have only seen half of the winners, so before making my ultimate judgements I am going to try to do that. I did however love "Memoirs of a Geisha" and I felt that John Williams should have gotten the Oscar for best score. I loooooved "Walk the Line" and even though Reese Witherspoon was talking faster that the Tasmanian devil, I do think she deserved her Oscar. I fell off my chair when "Its hard out here
for a Pimp" won and was frankly surprised that "Crash" won not because it didnt deserve it but because it came out so early in the year.

K.

Motherfucking Reese Witherspoon got best actress for her terrible portrayal of June Carter Cash?
Abso-fucking-lutely. "Who thought some little girl from Tennessee"?? Indeed Reese, who'd a thunk?

We like her and all...the acceptance speech was like Elle Woods at graduation.
If one more person compares this feeb or Jennifer Love Hewitt to Audrey Hepburn I'm gonna hurl chunks.

Maybe they gave her an award for having such a pretty husband.

Here's my take on Ryan Sorcerer; I thought he looked pissed every time the camera was on him last night and I think his face looked odd. Is just aging poorly (cuz he sure was "purdy") or is he just plump?

I noticed how good looking he is... Is he someone famous? If so, Pecker & Alex - get on it!

I admit I have NOT seen "Crash". So I have no take on the film.

HOWEVER- That Ocsar's version of "Hard Out Here for a Pimp" made me mute the freaking TV.

I just fucking hate Hip Hop and Rap and that was nothing but obnoxious noise. Why encourage organized cacophony? And Chris "Ludicris" (sp) Bridges on Katie and Matt Lauer this morning was so annoying I wanted slap him with his own ego.

Erm, her husband is actor Ryan Phillippe, who has surely been covered on these boards before.

I actually got roped into seeing this and it was pretty decent actually. I busted up laughing when Heath Ledger turned his wife over on her stomach. The thing that pisses me off, though, is that it seems like anyone who says anything except "this movie is great" gets labeled as a homophobe.

Dr. Dilznick,

I've maintained all along that the movie (Brokeback Mountain) is a snooze and I'm a big mo. I don't see anyone labelling ppl who didn't like BBM as "homophobic" unless they dislike is solely because it's about a love affair between two guys.

The saddest moment of the evening was when screen legend Lauren Bacall came out to announce a tribute to Film Noir (one person here knows why this is so important to me)...anyway, she shuffled out, was winded when she got to the podium, couldn't read the teleprompter...and her hair, makeup and frock were flawless. Sad stuff. She's always been such a sharp lady.

Sorcerer? She was stinko drunk. She's notorious for it at award ceremonies.

I still, however, think Bacall looked great.

I disagree (please don't hurt me.) John Williams pumped out 3 scores in a year. They were all pretty formulaic - they all sounded like a John Williams score. I like his style, but he didn't create an original sound for any of them. I think it's sad that a great composer has turned in to a factory of sorts.

Chuck you make a great point. I liked John Williams much better before Spielberg plucked him from the Boston Symphony Orchestra and he "went Hollywood". 'Formulaic' is the perfect word.

Quite honestly there wasn't a movie theme in the running that I thought was singularly award-worthy.

Thanks for the effort Alex, but nevermind. He was much prettier before whatever happened to him... I still can't believe that was him.

Thank you, Dr. Dilznick, for helping me make the point I hope to make here.

I observed, some time ago, that I did not pay much attention to the Oscars. (For a reference, see this thread.) The reason, aside from the fact that I'm simply not that interested in most movies, is that I view the Academy Awards as a 3-plus hour-long commerical for the motion picture industry. (I don't watch the Tonys, Emmys, Grammys, or any other award show either, for the same reason.) I see the Oscars as being little concerned with the art of making films and completely about the commercial end of the business. The winners are always (it seems) financially successful films and the focus is on them. Should you doubt me: consider how long the awardees of commercially unviable categories (for instance, best foreign-language film, for which an Oscar is a tremendous honor) get to speak about their award versus how long awardees in the commercial categories (best actor, actress, etc.) get to speak. For all the platitudes the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences spew out about how the Academy Awards honor the art and technology of storytelling, the bottom line is this: the Academy Awards solely exist to put butts in the seats of theatres and always have, essentially as the representative from the Academy described midway through the telecast.

I actually watched the Oscars, from beginning to end, for the first time tonight, because I had seen Brokeback Mountain and found it to be the best movie I had seen in years, if not in my entire life. Understand that I have not seen Crash (in fact, I had never even heard of it before tonight) and I assume by virtue of its nomination, it is a good film worthy of consideration for Best Picture. But I am not the least bit surprised that Brokeback Mountain did not win Best Picture: the Academy simply doesn't have the guts to choose it as best picture, regardless of whether it is or not. If theatres in mainstream America refuse to show it because they are afraid of its message, and as a consequence, it's not going to make boatloads of money, it's not going to win a high-visibility Academy Award, plain and simple. In my view, the Academy simply chose the least controversial film in the category in an effort to cover its ass.

So am I surprised that a film with a gay theme didn't win? Not particularly. Not as long as theatre owners-- and the public at large-- say "in your face, homos". Welcome to the real world.

Hung9Mike?

Thanks. If Brokeback Mountain had won and I'd written 'Brokeback - in your face negroes' I suspect I'd be landed on as a racist.

Your last paragraph is perfect. I had the same reaction. And did you notice during the acceptance for best movie the message of the accepting individual was "tolerance"? I guess that doesn't quite extend over to the homos...

You're critique of why the Academy couldn't give Brokeback the best film award (regardless of my personal views of the film's merit) are so precise I'm honored to read your post.

Thanks for verbalizing it, Richard
