NO actually it was Mira Sorvino for Mighty Aphrodite.
I thought you might be right but after a bit of imdb research I found she won the best supporting actress oscar.Best actress that year went to Susan Sarandon for 'Dead Man Walking'.
The previous year Dianne Wiest also won best supporting actress for 'Bullets Over Broadway'.

Oh...I didnt realize it had to be best actress. I thought just an Oscar, period. Oh well.

I should have been more specific, so well remembered anyway. It's a film I'd forgotten about (how could I forget that Mickey Mouse voice she had? :biggrin1: ).
Looking at the lists of oscar winning films over the years the ones that I've given most repeat viewings of (more than 4 times each) are:
Bonnie And Clyde
Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid
The Sting
Midnight Cowboy
The Godfather 1 and 2
2001: A Space Odyssey
Cabaret
Rosemary's Baby
Annie Hall
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
The Deer Hunter
Apocalypse Now
Raging Bull
I expect The Lord Of The Rings trilogy will join this list eventually.

Not familiar whether my favs are Oscar winners or not. Oscars have no bearing on whether I like a movie or not and judging from the lists above it's probably safe to say most of my favs aren't. Guess I just don't have "class".

On the other hand, a few movies that go on to be classified as "cult movies" or are otherwise considered ground breaking in some innovative way, are often those that came nowhere close to winning an Oscar. So I'm ok with that.

Mira Sorvino won the award for Best Supporting Actress in 1996(for 1995).
It's more usual for comedies to pick up that one, I think.
It also happened to Marisa Tomei in 1993(1992).

I watched Little Miss Sunshine last night. Even though he was only in the movie for a short while, Alan Arkin won the best supporting actor for the scene where he tells his spindly little grand daughter that she was the most beautiful girl in the world. I loved it.

The Academy have chosen not to reward many deserving films so I don't really think of the Oscar win as adding "class" to a movie.
'The Elephant Man' had 8 nominations and no wins.David Lynch (Martin Scorsese was also nominated for Raging Bull) was passed over for the Best Director and Best Picture Oscar in favour of Robert Redford for 'Ordinary People' that year.I've got nothing against Mr.Redford but that wouldn't have been my choice!
