I am a young medical profressional and always wear at least calf high socks to work under dress pants. My real questions is, what are your socks supposed to match pants or shoes or shirt?

I am no expert, but I tend to match them to the general color scheme I am wearing. example..black pants and a blue shirt I might wear either black or navy socks. same with browns and tans.
its good to hear that other men think its important too.

I lover over the calf dress socks too! I think they're really sexy haha

Regarding more formal dress in general, it does drive me bonkers when I see a tie with a really sloppy knot. I almost want to stop the person on the sidewalk and redo it for them! I have to dress up most days of the week when I clock in, but it really takes just a minute to get a neat, crisp knot and dimple if you're used to it.

I never heard of the shoes thing though! I'm gonna go run out and buy some polish, haha!

One of the reasons I love Hawaii is that socks are pretty much optional... But if I'm wearing a tuxedo or suit I do wear dress socks and I have a drawer full of them in various weights and colors. I feel that they should match the color of your trousers.

Or the shoe, or your accent color.

I live in Texas, though, which usually means cowboy boots, even with a suit. Looks great, if you have the personality to pull off the look.

I agree with you with sportswear but with a suit I think it's better to match it to the color or the trousers. I wear a navy blue suit with a tie with navy blue and pink accent; I would never dream of wearing pink socks. But I have to confess I only put on a suit if I have to go to court, and weddings, funerals and bar mitzvahs and tend to go more conservative out of reverence for the event. With a tuxedo the trousers and shoe are both black.

Hey Big Meat in NJ
Those socks are terrific!! Thats what I am talking about! They look and feel so right with any pants. Love the kacki colored ones. Do you buy them from sheersox.com??
The sheerness adds so much sensuousness to the entire look. I love wearing and showing them off. Most guys who see mine ask if they are "nylons". Ha! No class!!!! (them not nylons) Speaking of..... there are mens ph with sheer socks built in. oughta try 'em (wink wink)
e-mail sometime oK?

I have had to "dress up" for work for years, and always wear a tie - although some folks find my taste a little eclectic - and a Windsor knot is the only one for me.

I too, was brought up to polish my shoes every day and was told it's something by which I would be judged - and sure enough when it came time for me to recruit people, one of the first things I look at are the shoes...

But, as for these half-hose, or over the calf socks as you guys call them, they just aren't worn here (UK). Short socks are perfectly acceptable on anyone from the tea-boy (should such a position still exist) to the CEO. And the higher up the greasy pole you go the more leeway one can adopt in your choice of colour(s).

The British diplomat referrred to by a previous poster was almost certainly Chistopher Meyer, a past UK ambassador to Washington in Tony Blairs time. Another (serious) person notable for his choice of sock is Jon Snow, a higly respected TV news journalist, he also wears great ties.

I have worn suits for work all my life with dark socks if the suit is dark or a color that goes with lighter summer suits.
I have never worn calf dress socks in my life but whatever you want to call the ones that come just below the calf muscle.
No one sees and for me they are more comfortable than the ones that compress the muscle.
Casual is no socks.
Sports are the ones I guess you refer to as ankle socks
