And quotes-do I use them like this 'Henry was not amused' or like this "Henry was not amused"?

God bless you for reminding me. Any grammar specialists, please correct this punctuation if it needs to be corrected. This is how I always write.

She asked him "How was your dinner?"
or
She asked him "How was your dinner"?

AND

"How old is your dog?"
or
How old is your dog"?

Whether if the entire question is in quotation marks or just a part of the sentence, is the rule the same?

I know the sentences aren't put together well, but which of these is correct?
