There were no threats. Just action.

First time I saw my mother tear my older brother's butt up with a strip of Hot Wheels track? I became the best behaved child in the neighborhood.

I also changed what toys I wanted for Christmas as well. My dad would ask "You want Hot Wheels for Christmas?" I replied..

"NO! I want Legos. Mom can't beat me to death with them."

Can you imagine my terror when Crazy Glue came out? I was waiting on mom to make a Louisville Slugger out of Legos.

I'd forgotten about the threat of being sold to the gypsies, my mum used that one too, it was rather ineffectual as I loved the idea of having a flouncy skirt and a tambourine with ribbons on which I'd jangle as I danced around the campfire surrounded by traditional romany caravans :)
Oh that was mine. If i was bad i would have to go live with someone else usually the Gypsies or Clowns. I hade a real fear of Clown's as a child.

i can't remember any threats as such, but i had a couple of porky's told to me:

1) don't lie on your stomach after eating, we know womeone who had to have an operation because the food got stuck!" (i went to a friends house and watched him eat his tea while on his stomach and was terrified...when he was ok, i thought i'd try it.)
2) "don't swim after eating, it'll kill you!" after studying biology, the worst you will get is cramp....

what was it with them and food??

Well I think you may need some discipline young man. I am available for spankings if you feel you missed out :biggrin1:

"Don't kiss a boy in your bathing suit or you'll get pregnant" - why would a boy be in my bathing suit?

I was never threatened with being given away, it was always a threat of contact. Wooden spoons and plastic spatulas were waved at me, reminders of leather belts.

The most effective threat was never verbal. My father had "the look". The one that freezes you in place thinking, "uh oh..."

I'm suddenly remembering Bill Cosby's skit about black women's ability to kick their shoes off with deadly aim and parents telling their kids, "Go get me something to beat you with".

My mom used to tell me that she'd slap me into next week. It was always ineffective, as I knew it to be physically impossible.

Hah! My mom has a couple of sparklers like that...the two I remember best were:

I'll rip your lips off! and Boy, I'll snatch you bald-headed!

didn't often hear threats, they carried out the punishment.

A couple : "Wait until you father gets home" or "maybe we should have left you out in the field and see how you fend for yourself"

"hurry up or be left behind"

"your under my roof, I can put you out anytime"

This was more when we were little and grade schoolers. We heard stories about having to cut their own switch and such.

My mom had us on a harness when we were real little and in big crowds. Yes, I lived. I also did this with my son as a major road was re-routed 12 ft from our front window! If ya disagree, so be it. I would much rather have a safe child than someone who loses theirs or the child ends up injured. With balance problems I couldn't run to keep up and if he wasn't paying attention to a drive way I could always pull him back. Gave me a few more seconds.

I remember getting hit with the metal end of the fly swatter a lot, spanked on occasion, mostly put in the corner then being grounded when I was older.

My son, depending on the offense and if it has been a previous problem, first we start with a warning (unless safety related or he has done it before), nose to the wall, and occasionally he is spanked but only with a hand on his butt.

Something to be said about the way I was raised. I respected my parents, my elders, and most everyone else unless they lost my trust. I respected people who wore uniforms and my community and country.

As a teenager, I was rarely punished. My parents always knew where I was. I was respectful enough to call. I never had a cerfew. It was "be home at a respectable hour or make sure we know where you are."

To this day, I respect others until they give me a reason not to. I do not judge people by the first meeting as you never know what other factors/pressures they have been under one day. I value my family, my friendships, my community, and my country.

My mom had us on a harness when we were real little and in big crowds.

We call them reins in the UK and I had both of my kids on reins until they were old enough to be aware of the dangers of roads, it also stops them wandering off. All parents should use them.

My mum used to get hysterical about us swallowing chewing gum, she was full of stories of such and such a child who had to go to the emergency room to have a giant wad of chewing gum extracted from their guts.

They threatened to cut off my gorgeous, waist-length hair...and they followed through with it too.

When I started school my hair was the longest it has ever been, it went all the way to the top of my thighs - without telling my parents my nanna took me and had it all cut off so I wouldn't catch nits, my dad didn't speak to her for years.

My mum took care of discipline in my house, she could hit me but that would do nothing I'd just laugh, but oh man! she would start shouting at me and then  Hated it when she used to do that!

Yeah, that would upset me too. So much of my identity was in my hair. When I was very ill many years ago, most of my hair fell out due to the medication and just the severity of my illness...that was one of the most difficult things about my illness because it happened after I started responding to treatment, and was feeling better physically however I looked worse (compared to red-rimmed eyes, super pale, extreme weight loss followed by extreme bloating of stomach and face and legal blindness:eek:) It was not a good time in my life...

My kids were really good, I didn't often punish them and when I did it was sending to their room and as soon as they agreed to be good they could come back down (my son once stayed in his room for four and a half years) I gave them the look and said 'I'll count to three' and they always jumped to do whatever they'd been told to do, I'm glad because I had no idea what would happen if I ever got to three.

We just don't look the same without our hair do we 36, apart from when I just started school I've never had my hair shorter than mid back except once and I regretted it the second I'd had it cut.

My kids were really good too and they were best friends also. I hardly ever had to scold them, when I did they were sent to their rooms always followed with hugs later.
About my hair...it wouldn't have been so bad if I had been completely bald when it fell out, but it fell out in clumps so I had bald patches and where the hair was looked like baby bird hair...my cat was constantly hunting my head! When it grew back in, it did not come back as thick as before, but it is still thick...and curly.
