The film is set in 1985, so in fact the hair is perfectly appropriate.

Clearly filmmakers today don't believe in the concept of lighting. Nevertheless, from what we can see, Patrick looks as droolworthy as ever.

I know he intentionally gained a bit of weight for the role in "Watchmen". That plus the 80's hair changed his look quite noticeably.
Check him out in "Angels In America", "Hard Candy", "Passengers", or "Lakeview Terrace" as well.
