People afraid to show their cock..what is the deal?

My best friend grew up in a family of three sisters and his mom no father since he was very young. He doesn't understand why he wants to hide it in the locker room or put on his clothes in the bathroom even though like I said he lives in a house of females and was probably taught at a very young age that it was shameful to be seen naked by others. He has opened up a very little in the last two years. He now is willing to undress and go into the locker room shower nude so long is no one is around besides me and will not turn around but face the faucet the entire time. Doesn't bother me in the least because I have utmost respect for him and he has a great body but I wish he would not be so timid and open up a bit like he has tried to get me to open up socially for the last 5 years.

I wonder if some of the modesty in the locker room is due to the embarrassment of being not perfect in some physical way. Young guys have grown up being shown examples every day of the perfect guy and think that if they are not that, they are less of a man. So they don't need to put themselves at risk of ridicule by showing their unperfect naked bodies, much less their cocks.

I think not. If that were true, the less-than-perfect ones (the majority) would wear a burka, yet in my thousands of workouts across many clubs/states, I have observed no bashfulness whatsoever on the part of the towel-dancers when it comes to letting back hair, double-crease beer belly and poor hygiene all "hang out" around the whirlpool, sauna or steam room, yes, even when the company is co-ed and includes some fine female numbers...

...however, back at the farm, they'd rather die than expose their pecker for the 750 milliseconds it takes to change.

That's true. Good story about your friend too Mr_Bull. I've told this before, but it's a true story. There's a clothing optional hot springs on the western edge of Death Valley. Up until six years ago or so, there were volunteer built outhouses. The outhouses were just small, no door, you could look out over the desert while you did your business. But then the park service put in pit toilets like you find all over the national park service. Like it's just out in the desert and you camp out of the back of your truck and you can change anywhere, but now some people will use these pit toilets to change, while most visitors are walking around naked most of the time. Funny how people are about their genitalia.

I guess it just depends on the environment they grew up in. Having been brought up in a Marine Corps family and athletes I for one have no reservations about changing without the towel or even walking out of the shower without my towel on to change while many of these very good looking fellows practically deadbolt the thing to their waist and I for one don't have a great body or huge member. Perhaps it has something to do with that?

Haven't you guys heard? Penises are dirty, dangerous, gross.

So of course you'd want to cover THAT up.

Personally, I admire the guys at the gym who carefully wrap their towels, turn into the corner, and shimmy their underwear down under the towel so as not to flash even a square inch of skin at the rest of us who are happily wandering around letting the good stuff hang out.

Witness in the locker room..guys who go to the only shower stall thats curtained and slam the curtain across like someone is gonna spy their weiner..or dudes that have a towel wrapped around them and put their underwear on while the towel is still wrapped around them,,too funny. Some of these guys are sporting pretty big dicks too. Dont understand the modesty.
I think you have major issues with what other people do at the gym and in locker rooms.

I'll be brief because this could be considered another topic. First time I saw anyone do the towel dance was at the fitness area in the Riyadh Marriott (I was working in Saudi at the time). [I didn't go that far, but I was careful to be quick about my changing and always go to the closed shower stalls with a towel around me.] There was also a steam room there. Two European businessmen (I'm guessing from Amsterdam) nearly got into big trouble when they came into the steam room uncovered by towels. Two locals quickly got up and left. Another westerner and I explained to the guys that could have been arrested if those locals had had high connections and put them to use. I'm guessing that not too many of the towel dancers in my local gym now are muslims, but there can be a lot of reasons for what people do....

Like they say, "When in Rome . . . " Yes, sometimes it IS best to honor the local culture's traditions and practices. It can be considered an insult and very disrespectful if you don't. This wasn't about nudity but when I was a triathlete during the late 80s and early 90s, in spent a month in Israel and Egypt. These were the days of neon everything in Tri-wear. My nickname was DrDayGlo. One morning I decided to go for a run dressed in my neon yellow TriFit shorts, mesh TriFit shirt and Oakley neon yellow iridium shades . . . in the old city of Jerusalem. I was lucky to get back to my hotel alive. Yes, when in Rome do as the locals do . . . A basic rule for establishing affinity with another is to mimic their behavior.

Some people were brought up to be modest. Some people are just shy. Some people's upbringing left them so fucked-in-the-head that they can barely go out in public, even while fully clothed.

Some of us were made to feel embarassed and ashamed about every single aspect of our lives.

I would never set foot into a locker-room. I would never go outside in shorts or in a t-shirt, or no shirt for that matter.

How much skin do I show? Head and hands, but I'd rather just be invisible.

Thanks for your perspective minimag. I'm sorry that happened to you.

If enough people parade around naked in the locker room instead of doing the "towel deadbolt", perhaps it would send a signal to those later people that it is perfectly ok to be nude in a locker room and that they don't need to go through the hoops and loops of the towel dance.

My take is that some are under the impression that it is wrong to show skin in a locker room.

Some men still consider their package to be a strictly intimate/private part...in the same way some women would never wear anything revealing. There's nothing wrong with that.

Personally it doesn't bother me but it is quite amusing from time to time to see some guys dancing around in their towel trying to put on stuff.

Most all the time I cover up in a spa or gym. I feel a bit uncomfortable with guys gawking at me; perhaps i'm a little homophobic... Don't know...

Haha I know sometimes I almost hope they fall over trying to do just that. It's mean I know but still amusing.

Well from my own experience I noticed a majority of guys glancing around when somebody is in the nude probably to just see how they stack up to everyone else. I don't have a probably with getting looked at but I am the paranoid type so if you get within 22 inches I will slug you if I don't know you haha :poke:

I have been showering with other guys since I lived in the college dorm. Nobody in college seemed to mind being seen naked by others. Since then, I continue to shower with guys at the YMCA and relax totally naked with other guys in the Y's sauna, steamroom, and sit nude on the side of the hot tub. It doesn't bother me a bit to be seen naked by other men; I'm just an average looking guy....certainly not a hottie. I guess some men are more self conscious about their bodies, and we have to respect that. It does seem that the trend is toward more privacy such as shower stalls and curtains.
