Interesting I'll have to read it more in depth. (I'm sure it states people who drink socially or in moderation) Everyone who I have ever known who was a heavy drinker did not have great health to brag about. I have a friend who does medical research and he found out by accident that when he quit having red wine with his dinner his cholesterol rose significantly.

Reminded me a little of something I overhead when I was on a flight several years ago... a man leaned over to the women sitting next to him and asked if she had a light... she replied "I don't smoke but I like to sit in the smoking section because the people are more fun and interesting."

It's been long known that moderate drinking of alcohol (from a few a month, to 2 or 3 a day) can reduce risk of cardiac related diseases. It forms a U-shaped curve in terms of frequency of alcohol consumption versus cardiac complications. Most significant of all is the effects of red wine due to all the tannins, flavanoids, and other things that are in the wine because of the grape. But, beer comes in second and spirits fall into last place in "helpfulness". The antioxidant properties act to combat and even reduce arterial plaque build-up

Of course, alcohol consumption should only be suggested if there is no prior history of abuse in the person or their family.

It's not like I needed another excuse to drink wine with dinner :)

(I just wrote a research paper on all this, so it's kinda fresh in my mind)

Thanks for that info LargeSide i can go with that quite nicely
not needing confirmation but still nice to know of, long since believed if a person has the ole ultimate control in most things, he can enjoy a pretty full existence indulging in what ever he chooses.
funnily i do think a later age of starting these things can also be advantageous, starting at a much later stage of life .. just another of my crap reasonings ha

Got a 90 year old grandmother who has never had alcohol in her life who's in better physical condition than my parents so she must be an exception

There are outliers with very statistic you can produce.

Intriguing. I think I'll have a drink to celebrate.

People who drink alcohol outlive those who abstain, study shows
I take all these reports with a grain of salt and the knowledge that what they say today won't be true next week or a year from now.

Reports go back and forth on all these things all the time. It's been done with alcohol, coffee, chocolate, etc. Sometimes they say a few are good sometimes it's bad.

On the cholesterol level mentioned by nudeyorker, mine is naturally low and alcohol stopping didn't seem to change it. Must be genetics in my case.
