Such an eloquent response; I must say you don't allow the conventions of class to define you! But to your point about the "uselessness" of the DoE, I'll respectfully disagree. The DoE plays a vital role in the US economy and in national security. Here's a brief rundown of what I know they do:

• Run the nation's laboratories (Los Alamos -- remember the guys who gave us the first atom bomb so we could end WWII? Yeah, that's one of the labs and the labs belong to DoE)
• Protect the national infrastructure grid. (You know those nasty Russian hackers? What if they targeted our electrical grid instead of John Podesta's emails?)
  
• Secure the nation's nuclear stockpile. (You thought the military did this, right? Wrong.)
• Monitor nuclear safety. (Trump will want to build nuclear power plants -- want to guess who is in charge of that process? Hint: not the lowest bidder.)
• Participate in nuclear nonproliferation. (The International Atomic Energy Administration aka IAEA is a UN function... their counterpart and partner in the American government is DoE.)
• Develop clean energy programs. (I can't imagine this is a priority for Republicans now, but renewable energy is still cheaper than fossil fuels over the long-run. Either we will dominate this technology 20 years from now or we'll be buying it from the Chinese.)

DoE does dozens of other things but the point is this: climate change is a reality that affects some, but not all of the programs the Department operates. Like many things in life, the devil is in the details and before you or others assume Perry has an answer for DoE or will successfully 'eliminate the Department' as he proposed, you (and him) should first look at what DoE does.
