Earlier this summer, I got a small and mildly painful friction burn on the shaft of my penis that healed up after 3-4 days of moisturizing and taking it easy. But in late December, the burn came back and I’ve been struggling to fully get rid of it for the past month.

I think the burn happened because I wasn’t moisturizing my penis enough as the winter weather got colder and I sometimes masturbate without lube, or in the hot shower. I’ve had some brief luck getting the burn to go away if I moisturize the hell out of my penis and take it easy for a few days. But all it takes to make the burn come back is a couple of extended masturbation sessions and a couple days of forgetting to moisturize my penis.

My next approach is giving my penis a full week of rest and continuing to use coconut oil and some petroleum jelly to moisturize the burn. Maybe I’ve just jumped the gun too soon when trying to let it heal. I’ve been tested for STIs and that’s not what this is. At its worst, the burn is a small pink patch of irritated skin about the size of a pencil eraser, just below the head of my penis on the underside. If my penis is moist, it doesn’t really hurt. If it’s dry, there’s some mild pain when rubbed.

Has anyone dealt with a persistent patch of irritation like this before? The only thing that seems weird is that I can’t remember having to moisturize my penis so often during previous winters. Usually a few times a week did the trick but now I practically have to do it daily if I want to avoid getting irritation from masturbation. Maybe it’s part of getting older (I’m 33) or maybe I’m not drinking enough water. In any event, just wanted to ask and see if anyone else has gone through anything like this. If so, what helped?

(I did talk with my doctor about this and I’m going to see them if my week of taking it easy doesn’t nix the burn.)

It might be eczema or a fungal infection. Something like Daktarin (you can get it over the counter in the UK) would work if it’s a fungal infection.
If it’s eczema then you can get steroid creams from doctors but I prefer to use an emollient tbh, something like Cetraben. You need to use emollients around 2-4 times a day and use the emollient instead of shower gel/soap.
Hot showers dry out your skin, so I’d consider running a colder shower if you can.

I’m not a doctor or anything, but I do have eczema and this is what my doctors have suggested over the past couple of years.

Antifungal cream is going to be my next approach. I took five days off from masturbating and moisturized the hell out of the area with coconut oil and petroleum jelly. The redness became more of a mild pinkish shade and the area is smooth, but this just doesn't strike me a friction burn anymore.

If it keeps up longer, I'll see a doctor, of course. Thanks for your advice.

To classify what you describe as a burn is taking chances with your health. As it keeps coming back, it's more than likely something that needs to be seen by a doctor.

I really wouldn't wait, if you care about your penis or the people you may have sex with, it is necessary to get this resolved.

Steed, I think your advice is correct. I remember feeling embarrassed when I asked my dermatologist to check an area on the shaft of my penis which was slightly discolored. He used a bright light and examined the area and said that he did not think that there was a problem. I finally said, "That is the area where my thumb places pressure." He smiled and nodded knowing that I was referring to the edging sessions that I thoroughly enjoy.

This same thing happened to me a few years back. Now I have a darker spot on my shaft. I did go to a dermatologist and he said it's from overworking it and not enough lube. The sensation comes back if I overdo it once or twice a year. Doc said the spot will go away in a long time.

That's what it sounds like to me as others have said. It's probably the way you grip on edging and/or masturbation, etc. Let it heal for a couple of weeks and if pleasing yourself, use lube, never dry. If you go up and down on that same spot (same grip) chances are it's simply friction from your hand, or perhaps a rough part of your hand.
