Any other white people offended by the use of this term to describe non-white folks? I think it's a horribly crummy term. It implies that I, being fair-skinned, have no skin color. I may be fair-skinned beige, but it's STILL a skin color. Why can't they just use "non white"?

Never really gave it a thought but now that you mention it, yes.... It is offensive. in fact, it's a divisive term that separates caucasian people from other races.

Because 'non-white' sets white as the norm or the standard. There is no need to define black (or other) people by their non-whiteness. That's worse (for me) than 'people of colour'.

Also - you are OK with the term 'white', even though you describe yourself as 'beige', but you are not OK with being left out of the 'people of colour'. What the fuck is the difference?

Who cares? Don't take it so literally.

If you've got nothing better to get offended about then you're doing well.

I think Brits used to think that 'coloured' was a nicer term than black...but it isn't, and people get offended by it, so there's no point going there really.

It reminds me of this poem I read in university, by an anonymous African poet (at least, we did not learn his/her name).

    A Poem From Africa

    When I born, I Black
When I grow up, I Black
When I go in sun, I Black
    When I scared, I Black
    When I cold, I Black
    When I sick, I Black
    When I ill, I Black
When I die, I still Black

    And you white fella
    When you born, you pink
    When you grow, you white
When you go in sun, you red
    When you scared, you yellow
    When you cold, you blue
    When you sick, you green
And when you die, you gray
    And you calling ME Coloured?

People have been mean to me in my life because I was too white. They would shake me awake if I fell asleep on a sofa because they thought I might be dead.

But 'people of color'? it's slimy. It's rubbing it in. And I think that's where they got the idea for purple and green Muppets. Illogical and racist with a doily.

I only wish we live in a world where colour means nothing!!!
We never had anything different but "white" in Serbia, but recently we have like 10,000 Chinese people here!
I never noticed people hating them because of their colour, and we do have quite a racistic term for Asians. People hate them cause they are RICH!!!!

You being offended is deeply and inherently offensive to me! I demand you recognize my victimhood and give me what I want now!

I'm ok with the term "white." Mainly because that's just what's been used. Even if my color really is beige-ish. I just think that "person of color" implies that I have no skin color, since the logical opposite of that term would be "person with no skin color."

I'm sorry that it's a Sunday, that I'm bored, and that I decided to post my random thought in the section of this messageboard that is designated for such things.

"non-white" is the equivalent of gay people being called "non-heterosexual" or women being called "non-male". It set's one type of person as the standard.
