I played this discussion came at a New Years gathering a couple of years ago. Each person had to right down one response to each of the following questions. The answers led to great conversations.

Best Read: The Nutmeg of Consolation by Patrick O'Brien. Part of the Aubrey/Maturin series (Master and Commander)

Best Film: Ecstasy (1933) by Gustav Machatý. The first non-porn film to show sexual intercourse and female orgasm. Stars the unbelievably beautiful Hedy Lamarr (who also invented spread spectrum technology). Brains and beauty! The movie is actually quite good showing a strong German influence.

Favorite Song: Symphony No. 9, in E Minor "From the New World" (Op. 95), second movement, by Antonín Dvořák. What a beautiful surprise this was! Such a sweetly pastoral piece, I discovered it while playing Civ4 just a week ago. Listen to it if you like. Makes my eyes well just listening to the main theme, Coming Home, which has been adapted to numerous popular songs.

Best Purchase: Driving half way down New Jersey to collect my two pumi pups, Boomer and Tweeter. They've brought me much love and happiness despite all the difficulties of raising two puppies at the same time and in winter no less. They're great dogs.

Most Rewarding Experience: Discovering I'm not unlovable and that I can control my demons. It was a hellacious ride, full of a lot of pain and first-time experiences. While whom I feel in love with wasn't in love with me, I found a great friend who has helped me change my life in so many good ways. I may be near broke and living with my father at the age of 41, but I don't think I'd trade anything that happened for the rewards are a price above rubies.

Favourite Song Valerie Amy Winehouse
Best purchase An acoustic guitar - which I hope to be able to fucking well play at least a little by the end of 2008!
Most rewarding experience He knows who he is.

No more members with favourite books, films, songs, purchases etc.?

I was hoping to have a nice list or suggestions for books to read. Oh well.

FWIW I thought this was a great thread idea... I was hoping for some more action in it myself.

The next book on my night stand is We need to talk about Kevin (Lionel Shriver) and comes highly recommended - though I have no opinion of it myself yet... (Amazon.com: We Need to Talk About Kevin: A Novel: Books: Lionel Shriver)

If you want some more (and better informed) suggestions I enjoyed these two threads at the time:

Best Read - Eventide, by Kent Haruf.
Best Film - Running with Scissors
Best Song - I don't even know where to start on this... I have such an emotional connection with music, and so much of what I listen to is important and meaningful to me on some level. One song that affected me a lot this year (and did before, and still does) is "Cancer" by My Chemical Romance. YouTube - My Chemical Romance - Cancer I rang in my 2007 (and 2008) with a song by Motion City Soundtrack entitled "Together We'll Ring in the New Year". YouTube - Kingdom Hearts-Motion City Soundtrack "When the President Talks to God" held more and more meaning for me as 2007 progressed. YouTube - When the President Talks to God I also fell in love with a local band this year, and they created one of my favorite songs called "Don't Call it a Ghetto". YouTube - Architects: Don't Call It A Ghetto My favorite love song of the year is "Midnight" by Yaz. YouTube - YAZOO midnight Hot damn. That's enough about music. Sorry, I go a little crazy with that...
Best Purchase - I would have to say school. What's better than an education?
Most Rewarding Experience - I don't know if I really had any experiences that were really rewarding. Hrm. Kinda sad, eh?
