Pet groomer charged with piercing kittens
Officers say she marketed the 'gothic' cats with ear, neck, and tail piercings
The Associated Press

ALLENTOWN, Pennsylvania - A woman who marketed "gothic kittens" with ear, neck and tail piercings over the Internet has been charged with animal cruelty and conspiracy.

Dog groomer Holly Crawford, 34, was charged Tuesday by humane officers. Her home outside Wilkes-Barre was raided Dec. 17 after the authorities received a tip from the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that she was marketing the animals online for hundreds of dollars.

Crawford has said she will plead not guilty.

Crawford said Thursday that she didn't see any difference between piercing a cat and piercing a human. She said she used sterile needles and surgical soap and that she checked the kittens several times a day to make sure they were healing properly.

"When I did it, it wasn't with any cruel intentions," said Crawford. "They were definitely loved, well-fed, no fleas, clipped nails. And they were happy."

'No excuse'

Daphna Nachminovitch, a vice president for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, called the piercings "barbaric."

"There's no excuse for inflicting such pain on an animal that's the size of your palm," she said.

Crawford, who sports her own body piercings, said she decided on a whim to pierce the ears and neck of a stray kitten she took in last fall and named Snarley Monster. She said she docked the cat's tail because it was badly damaged and that the animal was not intended for sale.

Morrison charged Crawford and William Blansett, 37, of Sweet Valley, each with three misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty, three summary counts of cruelty and three counts of conspiracy.

Crawford said Blansett helped take calls about the kittens but that he had nothing to do with the piercings.

A number for Blansett could not be located.

Crawford said her dog-grooming business, Pawside Parlor, has plummeted since the raid and that she has received dozens of nasty phone calls.

"My name's ruined, my reputation's ruined, my business is ruined," she said.

:wtf2: is wrong with people. How could she not see this was wrong?!?!?
Those poor kittens. God only knows what she did to other animals in her care under the guise of grooming.

It's nothing new, I remember in the late 80's a few doberman pinschers that had earrings. It's no more crueler than docking tails or chopping off part of the ear.
I remember seeing the dobermans with gold hoop earrings like a damned pirate or something. :mad:As if dobermans weren't menacing enough.

For some reason this just seems worse, maybe because kittens are supposed to be cute and cuddly and there is nothing cuddly about a pierced kitten. Let's be serious, while I know some nice Goth people they are rarely cute with their pale faces, Alice Cooper inspired makeup, and jet black hair.

This is animal cruelty. :irked:

how da fuck can anyone be so heartless?! no matter how hard peoples are, they'll always love kittens and puppies. always. fuckin sick kine person do that?

even worse are da peoples who bought them. they should be arrested too.

and i love how holly said she didn't see the difference between piercing a cat and a human. butch, the difference is that a human can give consent, and an animal cannot! fuck. i've never wanted to hit a woman before, but if i were to see her on the street, i'm pretty sure that urge would come over me. i wouldn't act on it, but i know it'd be in the back of my mind.

and i like how she's concerned for her name and all. maybe you shouldn't have been such a stupid cunt, yah?

all that said, i'm also against PETA in general. though, this is the first thing i've agreed with them on.

Lets face it, no one is up in arms about tagging of farm animals and so on, they are up in arms because its a cute little kitty, and I'd put money on at least some of those objecting having pierced their babies ears not long after birth.

The size of the animal makes little difference, a piercing is a piercing and there are far worse things they could be doing imo. I don't agree with it, not for a second, and I'd never do it myself, or buy one that someone else had done it to, but I really think its time for a little perspective

I agree with Kotchanski, the brand burned into my ass still hurts after more than 30 years.

Listen if we don't take up for the animals then no one does Deno.
It is a insane response to pierce kittens or dock tails and ears especially now since the A.K.C., U.K.C. and others have deemed it unecessary to show
those type of dogs altered. I also don't care for Peta's agenda in general.
Damn and I really wanted to be branded but I hate pain! Ugh!

Agreed. I don't think it should be allowed, but you pass a law, you put a stop to it, whatever. Take the piercings out, they grow over, it's done. The woman does not need to be prosecuted. This is why people think some Animal Rights people are nuts.

Because they are.

The women needs to be prosecuted by a law that has some teeth!
Our laws do not accurately reflect the damage that some of us have done to our animals. They need to be strengthened and made to stick.
That goes for whether you abuse your horses, livestock or dogs and cats.
Some of Peta's goals are absurd but not the ones calling for stronger penalties for abusers.

I've seen some pictures of pierced pussy on some galleries here
Should arrest the culprit.
