I'm not gay, but I could see that this was an important film. AIDS started in 1981, and no one really talked about it until the late eighties. So this film showed people that they were normal people. It woke people up.

When I first saw it I thought the evil anti-gay lawyer villains were sort of cartoonish and unbelievable, which diminished the film for me. I saw it again on cable a few months ago and was really moved that time. I guess in the years since it came out I've learned that the world really is full of assholes, so it didn't require as much suspension of disbelief.

Anyway, Tom Hanks is such a great actor, I can see that he may have "humanized" gay people or a lot of folks who didn't personally know any.
