Interesting thread. The word finally came to me today while talking about aviation history, (that was after my post on Aloe Vera).

Sorry, this is off topic, but I hope we can get on the rails again soon.

Word du Jour: APHORISM

Specifically, an aphorism is a saying that makes a point or expresses the opinion of the speaker by illustrating or describing the horizon of that perspective. Instead of standing outside a viewpoint and describing the viewpoint, an aphorism adopts a viewpoint and identifies the things which are only visible from that perspective. Usually an aphorism is a very concise statement of a phenomenology.

Eg: One man's meat is another man's poison.

(Oh shit, now I realise that aphorism should have been in the cock-cheese thread)

Fish it's fish not meat - that would be one man's meat is another's viande - doesn't really work.

I agree about aphorisms and have thought so since I tired a little Parmenidean ontology that fell on deaf ears. But consider.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

This is about freedom and possession, and ultimately western philosophy has been about freeing the mind through independent and elucidated thought - eleutheria.

This works until you consider that half of the birds are cock birds and I don't know if it still rings true that

A cock in the hand is worth two in the bush.

The lack of real contact between mathematics and biology is either a tragedy, a scandal or a challenge, it is hard to decide which. (Gian-Carlo Rota, 'Discrete Thoughts')

It is natural to think that an abstract science cannot be of much importance in affairs of human life, because it has omitted from its consideration everything of real interest. (A.N. Whitehead)

Mathematics is purely hypothetical: it produces nothing but conditional propositions. (C.S. Pierce)

Mathematical and biological. Evolutionary biology requires both. Our monk friend didn't toil in the pea patch for nothing.
If you want to be exacting, not every 'gene' is mendellian though. Consider genes that are linked through close proximity, they are almost always inherited together. Also, not every phenotype is genetic, a chromosome problem inherits itself in strange and wonderful ways, such as Downs syndrome.

When having a dental X-ray taken, it always spooked me a bit when the technician made a point of departing the X-ray chamber and hiding behind a thick wall while my skull is zapped with high energy radiation.
