I was with a female friend of mine and we stopped off at her parents house to pick up some things. I am 24 and she is 23 and we went to high school together. When I looked at the fridge in her parents house it was full of pictures of their 3 daughters all now 21-26, mostly all sports related when they were younger. But there were a couple high school homecoming and prom pictures. For my friend there was a prom picture from her junior year with her first boyfriend (who is still in her life and always has been) and her senior homecoming picture with her second boyfriend (the guy is not a good guy but is kind of in her life). She had one boyfriend in college and that is it.

Is this weird to still have these pictures of exes up at your parents house? I even remember the picture of her first boyfriend up while she was still with her second.

It's not weird at all. These exes were a significant part of her life and also of her parents' lives. I think it's a little naive to assume that all traces of the ex will be erased after a breakup, especially if it was amicable. As she gets older, it's much more likely that she'll have longer relationships and maybe even kids with some of these exes. I don't think it's fair to assume she should remove 5+ years of memories from her life.

^^^ For real.

Given that these were from events that many consider pretty significant (I can't think of greater torture than high school proms and homecomings, but I know people get all worked up over that shit), why wouldn't they have pictures that include her exes? I mean, I would be weirded out if I found a glamour shot of my partner's ex on the wall next to framed pictures of the rest of the family, but a prom picture? Meh. No need to worry.

I dated a girl in high school and then moved away when I joined the military. five years later, after the girl had been engaged to another guy for over a year, I stopped by her parent's house and they still had a picture of me under the glass on an end table. I had a good relationship with the whole family. I didn't have sex with their daughter until we were both in our 40s. It was great! Lotsa "gee we should have done this long ago" stuff going on.

:biggrin1: There aren't pictures in my in-laws' house, but we still have a couple pieces of furniture in our house that were made by my wife's ex b.f.

I guess I just assumed that once girls dump/leave a guy they ran all over the house taking down all the pictures and threw them in a box like you see on TV, especially in their late teens/early 20s. Especially since she lived in that house for her entire senior year of high school with a picture of her and her ex on the fridge, while she was dating another guy.

I wouldn't worry about it. My parents still have homecoming pictures of my sister lying around the house and she's now in her 30s and married with a kid. Most of the time they just sit on the wall and collect dust.

I think with old prom pictures and photos of similar events like that people hold onto, the guy is mostly just a prop and the picture is really about their daughter being dressed up and going through a right of passage. It's all about her to them, not some guy who came and went. I wouldn't think anything of it, really.
