These are fair points and I couldn't find anything of his published papers, so I assume he didn't produce those. Agreed he was not a PhD star by this indicator, which is a good one, but still he would have a high level relative to the general population. The top 1% was of the whole population not of his UCL engineering cohort which he may have been towards the bottom of.

I don't know that he'd be bottom - taking in the whole year group at UCL. At least there could likely be others in that position. But he would certainly not be top for reasons given above and I would say more towards bottom of his cohort.

About 30 or so. Still has a great body and muscles but he may be forgetting some of his maths. Mathematicians peak young.
