Our nursing instructors taught us to use a cold cold washcloth on the area.
I've only had one patient when I was a student (with that problem) and he was post op.
He was allowed to stand at the bedside and for what ever reason, he had a hard on. I am sure it had nothing to do with sex, he'd had surgery and was tired and grouchy. Even more so because he had to pee.
So, I got him the cold cloth and that seemed to do the trick.
I don't know exactly how well it took; I allowed him the privacy to take care of it, as long as I was near enough to make sure he didn't fall, and got back in bed safely.
