I'll leave them be when they leave me be. And over the last 2000+ years (as I tried to indicate in my first post on this thread - apparently without success  ), they've demonstrated that they're not inclined to do that.

As a Roman Catholic who isn't really practicing currently, I found the Da Vinci code as a wonderfully written Historical Fiction. I'm not sure I take it as fact, but it would change the church if it did in fact turn out to be true. Changes, I think are necessary. Celibacy just ain't working anymore. Let them marry, maybe then we wont have to deal with sexual abuse by priests.

I don't really like any of them. I don't see the point. They're an excuse to avoid reality. We all have ways of avoiding reality - drinking and posting on the internet, for example - but they aren't really things to be proud of, or to proselytize to others. And certainly, these things become a problem when they infringe on others' rights.

Yes, lots of good things have been done in the name of various religions, but many (I would venture to say "most") of these things didn't require religion to be accomplished.

I have no problem with religious people in general, provided that they don't attempt to convert me, or try to make me live by their rules. I don't attempt to drag teetotallers into bars, or try to convert lesbians to heterosexuality. Nor do I attempt to force people to maintain a basement cupboard full of 5-12 year old Bordeaux. I expect the same respect from the religious. And too often, I don't get that respect.

This practice alone, I feel, has become more of a stumbling block to Catholic priests than anything else. Let them marry and have families, I suspect no harm should come of that!

I understand they have covenanted their lives to God, but I don't see why that should forbid a life of marriage - mortal marriage, that is. According to Christian doctrine, marriage is designed by God and perhaps even encouraged. The Apostle Peter, who Catholics regard as the first Pope, was married - I believe Paul was, too.

They should allow clergy to marry and women to be priests.

Hmm, this seems to be a common idea/misconception in a lot of posts I have read recently. Where do you get that some of us are shitting on christians and holding islam sacred? My humble opinion is that they are all a crock of shit. Keep in mind, I am talking about the organizations themselves, not the practitioners.

<standard boilerplate disclaimer I have learned to insert here... if the following statement does not describe you, then it is not directed at you...> It seems to me that the ones who are most sensitive and defensive and rabid about their chosen religions are those who have the weakest faith, and tend to exhibit the least godlike behavior.

you want me to calm down in the belief that i don't know your whole story and yet you know nothing of mine and proceed to call me a "dogmatic Roman Catholic" when in fact, i've been to Mass not only under instruction by Priests, who i'd thank you not to call moronic, for the mere notion that you have never met all of them and shouldn't make a sweeping accusation as such, i've been to Mass in three different continents, under Priest, Bishop, ArchBishop and Cardinal, and i'm NOT "SPOON FED" a damn thing, you may feel neglected and unguided, but to me, i feel my religion and more importantly, my FAITH, in my soul, and no "hysteric" (for the contrary) like YOURSELF will have any sway in that matter, MON AMI!

 Any guesses as to gender?? I say female.

Late chiming in. Some basic facts of history:

1. Under Constintine the state religion became Christianity. There were five patriarchs or centers: Rome, Contintinople, Antioch, Jeruslaem and Alexandria, Eqypt.

Jere os what happend to the five centers anad five patriarchs
Rome: Roman Cahtolic and has a Pope
Contintinople: Eastern Orthodox Churhc and has a Patriarch though not with the powers that the Pope has in the Roman Church.
Antioch: Distroyed city. No trace left from that center of the church
Jerusalem: After being conquered by Islam. The Roman church, The eastern church and the coptic church all have a patriarch in Jerusalem and of course sya their patriarch is the real one.
Alexandria, Egypt: Coptic Church. I don't know how that church is organized.

Peter went to Rome. One poster said that Peter was not the first bishop of Rome. It is my understanidng that most historians say that he was. It was not the state church that Constantine set up in the 300 AD though. There is not a consensus of the history of Christinaity in Rome prior to 399 AD.

Contintine call for a Council of Bishops meeting and the canon of the Bible and the Nicene Creed was written at the Council of Ni and I'm sorry I can't remember how that word is spelled except the the word Nicene comes from the name of the city where the council met.

It was at this council where the gnostic gospels were declared to be hertical and were not included in the Bible. Catholics also include the Aprocrahpha. Protestants to not. Why? I'm not sure. Been told too many verions.

It is on these Gnositc Gospels which are indeed historical but rejected by the state Christina Church under Contintine in the 300 AD that are the basis of the historical fiction book The De Vinci Code.

I am a youth director. I plan to take my youth to the movie and then discuss how the Gnostic gospels are different to the ones in the New Testament. And we will discuss what part of that book was actual historical information that was used to wrtie the novel and what part is totally fiction and comes from the imagination of the novelist.

I think that is the best apporach. Don't condmen. Study and know what is alive and what is different. What is there that our church agrees with and what part is thre that our church would disagree with and why.

Censorship is a bad thing Period. I;m sorry that many of the fundies and the Catholic Church is trying to suppress members from seeing it. That is not the answer.

Thanks Fred.

As always, you're the voice of reason. Here in Boston we have a local show at 7:30 at night called "Chronicle". Last night the hoopla surrounding The DaVinci Code was the featured topic. One obviously irate Roman Catholic priest told "all Catholics" not to read the book and to boycott the movie. His quote? "I'd recommend The Terminator over that blasphemous movie any day. I'd rather watch Arnold Schwarzenegger than that heresy".

Okay then. Overt human violence to the Roman Catholic priesthood is preferable to a mystery surrounding the life of Christ (be it fiction-based or otherwise)? Seems about right.

I think that take is appalling and speaks volumes about where the Roman Catholic Church stands today.

"A very wise British priest noted recently in the press, ‘Christian theology has survived the writings of Galileo and the writings of Darwin; surely, it will survive the writings of some novelist from New Hampshire.’"

Novelist Dan Brown author of The Da Vinci Code
