This is interesting, here in Australia we need a prescription from the doctor to get the morning-after-pill. I'm assuming this is what he is referring to?

I think having it so accessible is not a good idea...people will misuse it or it will encourage less safer sex. It really fucks with your body/hormones for about 72hrs I've heard?

And how will they be sure that ppl accessing it are over 18? ppl could easily stock up on a few and give them to underage girls too.

That blows if you need a prescription to get the morning-after pill.

I had a scare once when a condom broke. I just thought I was having the best sex of our relationship with a long-term GF, pull out after I cum and am greeted by a rubber ring half way down my shaft.

Numerous web searches, a chat with an experienced friend, three hours and $25 later and we had the morning-after pill in hand.

How did she handle it? She was fine, actually. No major impact on her and no pregnancy.

Does that mean the next time we just said "fuck it" to condoms and went to get another morning after pill? Hell no. First off--$25 a pop. Secondly, who wants to take "the abortion pill" as a regular contraceptive?

What stuns me is people act like this is a big deal, but just shrug at the thought of teens buying viagra and going on fuck-fests with each other. It happens, and that's not even over-the-counter. Shit, if plan B were such a great thing to be taking all the time, don't you think kids would be taking it whether it's legal or not?

Plan B isn't the abortion bill.. cuz it won't terminate a pregnancy.
is a mega-dose of a hormone called levonorgestrel.
reduces the chances of the egg being fertilized.
and if the egg is fertilized Plan B keeps it from implanting in the uterine lining.

That's why "the abortion pill" was in double quotes (because it's not really an abortion pill).

See my signature for more on this and other misunderstandings.

i got the double quotes... just threw the lil info blurb out there for the folks who don't know the difference.

working with outreach programs i run into heaps of folks who think handing out condoms is the same as forcing young peoples to get naked, and that birth control pills are the same as the abortion pill.

urm.. maybe my new sig should say something like i am not as dumb as ya think

I've gotten the morning after pill here in Queensland without a script.
I just walked into the chemist and quietly explained the situation and I got it without any drama.

They made it OTC a few years ago. I believe that applies to all states, although I'm not 100% sure. It's definitely OTC in NSW.

I've taken it a few times because I wasn't allowed to take hormonal contraception and the condom broke. (I preferred risking taking a hormonal MAP over risking getting pregnant while on warfarin.)

My experience of it was fine with no fucking of body or hormones.

Saying that it encourages less safe sex is kinda silly IMO. It's all too similar an argument to the one that says 'If we encourage condom use, it encourages people to have sex'.

And how will they be sure that ppl accessing it are over 18? ppl could easily stock up on a few and give them to underage girls too.
How many girls do/did you know who used the law as a guide to when they should start having sex?

Ah, okay I didn't know it was over the counter now. I actually don't know much about it...just the scary things they told us at highschool saying it will fuck with your hormones real bad...but they prob just told us this to scare us off having sex in the first place.

Saying that it encourages less safe sex is kinda silly IMO. It's all too similar an argument to the one that says 'If we encourage condom use, it encourages people to have sex'.

In terms of the encouraging less safe sex thing...I was kinda just going on my experiences with guys that always have the arguments that they don't like wearing condoms... I could see some of those guys using that as an additional argument 'it's okay, after we have sex you can just take the morning after pill that i bought at a vending machine earlier'. It probably is silly...i'm just basing this on some of the scum that i was unfortunate enough to know haha.

That was actually part of my point...why restrict it to 18 year olds when people younger choose to have sex,,, and also cos the legal age of consent is 16.

I also just think that people (particularly young girls) should be made aware of what they are actually taking and the potential side effects...which is why I reckon they should get it from the chemist or the drs. I don't think a vending machine would be very educating.

But maybe I just think too much haha.

If a dude showed up with a morning after pill in his pocket for me to take after we fucked I would make him take it... as a suppository... without removing the packaging first!

No seriously though - that would not fly with me, even teenaged MB wouldn't have taken that shit.

While I agree with you to an extent I also think there are plenty of younger people (and some older) who would not be able to ask for it over the counter or wouldn't ask their doctors - I think it is a damn shame they don't feel they can - that they are too embarrassed or that they don't trust health care professionals to keep confidentiality but it does happen and if those kids (and even the of-age ones are still kids) can get themselves out of a potentially life altering and traumatic situation with 25 bux and a vending machine well, I'm kinda for that.

This is true. Plan b does not terminate a pregnancy. If the egg does not implant into the endometrium , there is no pregnancy. Eggs are fertilized and never make it to the destination all the time. Plan b halts the implantation .

As far as side affects and hormonal swings, well they're no where as bad as pregnancy .
As far as minors getting hold of it? It's a non issue to me, it's pretty safe. Planned parenthood gives condoms to minors, and in some states does abortions without parental concent, or notice. A difficult issue in itself.

They probably did :biggrin1:.

Truly, the MAP isn't something to take lightly. It is, as has been said earlier in this thread, a massive dose of hormones, taken all in one hit. For some people that can have some negative side effects - bleeding, vomiting, mood swings, etc. But for many it has no noticeable effects.

It should never be considered a primary method of birth control (who knows what kind of effects it could have if used as such), but for those times when it's really needed, it's invaluable.

I find it interesting that you've known guys like that because, although I was told again and again that guys WOULD try to convince you not to use one, I've only ever had one who actually tried (he didn't succeed!).

I think young people need to be taught early on how to be strong enough to stand up for their own sexual and body based rights. I think they also need to be educated on each of the different methods of birth control, and on how sex, pregnancy and STDs work.

Because I WAS taught those things, I find that I struggle to have empathy for those who aren't knowledgeable or strong enough to stand up for themselves. It's obviously unfair of me, but I can seem to change it . I just wish everyone was taught those things.

Ah, okay! My apologies! I missed that! Obviously I agree .

I very much agree the awareness part of this, however I also think people need to take responsibility for their own bodies and behaviour. Even when medication doesn't come with a CMI (the bit of paper that tells you about side effects and stuff), you can always look it up on the net.

To be honest, I think having it in vending machines is probably putting a little too much responsibility on the consumer. Many people just aren't responsible enough about what they're taking. But yet, I also have the other side of me that thinks that it's not the government's job to parent them. If you're old enough to be fucking, you're old enough to take responsibility for your birth control.

While the chemist is much more convenient than having to see a doctor, in my experience they're more over protective than my doctor is!! They asked me 1000 questions and insisted on giving me a whole bunch of info I truly didn't need (because I already knew it).

Tangent, but werd! to that. One chemist in my area insists of giving me the full spiel and all the leaflets for anti-coagulants any time I go in there for my monthly script. I have been taking anti-coagulants without pause for over 8 years! I avoid that chemist now, if possible.

I've blacklisted one as well!! First they were too judgmental (in a moralistic sense) about me using the MAP. Then it got even worse. I was actually asking for the MAP BEFORE having sex, because I was going away for several days to a place that had no chemists nearby. I didn't want to risk not being able to get to a chemist after a breakage. When the chemist heard that, they started in on a lecture about how irresponsible I was being (really?). I walked out after about a minute of it, and haven't been back.

I had the anti-coag spiel as well occasionally when I was still on warfarin. It gets a bit much at times!

Agreed 100%
And leaning more towards the part about governments not being a babysitter.

I still stand by the idea they sterilize everyone except a select few in this generation. Resources, man.
