But a TOS violation? That seems pretty ridiculous. Why would the recipient of an unsolicited PM owe the sender anything?

The meaning of the word "private" should be self-evident. The recipient of an unsolicited PM owes the sender very little - no reply, no positive thoughts, no free raffle tickets - but he does owe him privacy. Just plain ol' English there, and the TOS needn't come into it.

There is at least one very loud (not quite the right word, but it seems appropriate) poster here who has insisted, vociferously, on more than one occasion, that PMs are to be made public whenever he/she (a circumlocution I detest, but I'm disguising identies here) so decides. I consider that not only incorrect but contemptible.

My own solution? PMs are stupid and I never read them. In fact I think I have them turned off at the moment. Works great! If there's an emergency - a fire, or something - my e-mail still works. Though I only read my e-mail on special occasions - like, if there's a fire, or something.

BD, I gotta disagree with you there... I guess my USPS analogy didn't really illustrate what I meant, let me try a phone analogy.

When you make a phone call, you do have a reasonable expectation of privacy for that call. If any person receives obscene, abusive, harrassing, or threatening phone calls, the receiver is under no obligation to keep the content of those calls private. Such calls (including Caller ID information and content) may be shared with any person or organization of the receiver's choosing.

Anjie like the rest of us is entitled to her opinion. But that she should choose to round on someone who isn't boxing at her weight gives her away. And, Yorkie your facetiou remarks about Amnesty International proves what we have long suspected that you have the manners of a coward. In a democracy we are entitled to our opinions. Suck up to the bullies long enough fella and they might notice you. Anjie, If you need to beat up on people who's mother tongue is not English go down to your convenience store, with Yorkie on a leash of course so he can snap at ankles, and try it on. You wouldn't dare so don't come the old malarky with reasonable people here.

Why?

What if the nomenclature was changed to personal message (wikipedia does this, incidentally) or instant message?

Do your views on PMs mean that if the recipient finds the message offensive, he or she doesn't have the right to report it to a moderator?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just trying to understand why you think a PM recipient owes the sender anything at all. When I send a PM, I assume the content could be sent to someone else, to a moderator, or posted. Ironically, I have had the content of (solicited) PMs used to attack me on the board on a couple of occasions. I certainly thought less of the poster for doing this (and considered this rude behaviour) but that's the chance you take. Moral: choose your PM friends wisely.

I'm with DC on this one.

Good analogy - I would take it one step further and point out that in many jurisdictions, recording a phone call (without a warrant) is legal provided that one of the parties to the call consents.

Applying this to PMs - they're private if both parties want them to be. And if one party doesn't, all bets are off.

And you have the brain of a retard.
The cowards are the ones who send abusive PM's,I have never done such a thing and never will. All I've done is offer a few words of support (in this SUPPORT GROUP!) to Anjie because she was upset.
Unlike her critics she was brave enough to post photos on here, and I'll guarantee they were more attractive than anything YOU could come up with.
The only bully here is you,''fella''.
