Here's one of the simplest and truest poems I have ever read.

Of course, the original has a greater impact, but even this English version reads very well.

I think most of you on lpsg will agree with these lines.

THE ART OF LOVING (MANUEL BANDEIRA)

If you want to feel the happiness of loving,

forget about your soul.

The soul ruins love.

Only in God can the soul meet satisfaction.

Not in another soul.

Only in God — or out of the world.

Souls cannot communicate.

Let your body understand itself with another body.

Bodies understand each other, but souls don’t.

(trans. Simone Gugliotta)
