Yeah, it's officially okay to tell polish jokes*.

Assholes.

*related to homophobia and misogyny. Leave the submarines out of it.

Lols. May I be the first to point out, annoyingly, that IRL I actually have a Polish surname?

Not all of us are pricks.

However... the PiS party tired to do this in 2016 but there were widespread protests. Those are a little more difficult this time round, quite possibly the g'ment is taking advantage of that. It's totemic for the PiS party but 99% of Polish women who want/need an abortion already go abroad. I think, ultimately, as regressive as this is, it changes very little.

I don't know why politicians or interest groups feel the need to invade peoples private lives in what is an emotional and extremely difficult decision.

Having visited this throughout personal and family life, all of my support goes along with those whose decision it is to make, whatever they decide. For me, it is their well-being which is first and foremost. It is of no concern to others or third party do-gooders.

Maybe you had a chance to take a glance at the "Anti-LGBT zones" thread on this forum and think that this is absolutely crazy. Well it doesn't stop there. Yesterday, the Constitutional Tribunal stated that the foetal defects are unconstitutional then it comes to abortion.

Before that, Poland had one of the most strict rules on doing a legal abortion in the EU. There were basically three valid reasons: there is a problem with foetus and the baby is unlikey to survive the birth, the life of a mother is in danger and being a victim of rape. Even if you could do it legally here, it would be still hard, since there is a stigma that this is something to be ashamed of. Because of that, most women go abroad for abortion (to Germany or Czech Republic). Now the little they had has been taken away from them. In 2019 there was only 1,000 abortions done legally in Poland, whereas in Germany, for example, there were 100,000.

This seems to be sort of a final straw in the unacceptable actions of our government and it inspired people to go out on streets and starts massive protests. Today evening the are demonstations in all major cities, including Warsaw, Krakow, Szczecin, Wroclaw, Katowice, Poznan.
Here you can see what is going on right now in my city:

In Poland we recently started the COVID pandemic for real. Almost every day we have a new record of new cases, with today's 13,632. On top of that, since the beginning of October only people with the whole spectrum of symptoms are tested (we have ~25% positive rate). These massive demonstrations are not going to help make things better now.

I'm with you all the beautiful women out there. You deserve to be treated with dignity.

There is an irony in the sanctity of life dogmas in what is essentially a death cult.

The young people of Poland have my sincere sympathy that they have to suffer what is hopefully the death throes of the influence of a Bronze Age religion.

At least the Pope supports gay marriage. I bet that had a few Polish Patriarchs choking.

I made another thread about that, but please be informed that not all of us Poles are assholes, at it was nicely mentioned above.
I know. And I know there's other reasons for voting for the ruling party. It's just that certain member states are moving in the wrong direction - e.g. Hungary and Poland. We don't need undemocratic states in the EU. It's enough we have an undemocratic US.

I've merged this thread with another same-subject thread that was started in Politics. The merged thread has been placed in the Politics Forum.

This thread is about "Poland Effectively Bans Abortion".

There are thread about abortion in the U.S./worldwide that are more appropriate for posts that are not specific to discussing the current situation in Poland.

Let's please all try and stay on topic.

Thanks!

I don't agree with the merging of these 2 threads. Abortion can be discussed from a "political" position. It can also be discussed as an issue with special interest for women. I would venture they would be 2 VERY different discussions.

And that's exactly why the two threads were merged and moved to the Politics Forum.

Had the persons who started both threads not been so purposeful with their specific mention of Poland in their titles, I would not have taken this action.

I expect threads in the Political Forum to go off on tangents. As long as they remain relatively on topic, you know we won't normally take such actions. That was not the case here.

I'm just curious as to why this thread is being watched so closely and so many posts deleted when really, it's a discussion and it's gonna meander a bit.

I would understand if we started discussing the US/Mexico border out of nowhere, but all the posts that were deleted were about abortion and while maybe not directly about it in Poland and the new laws, they were in relation to why it should be accessable and available worldwide.

I'm not upset with the merge, I'm just bugged that we're not supposed to discuss it unless it's *specifically* about Poland. There were a lot of valid posts in this thread, in my opinion very on topic being that in Poland they had legal abortion, then it was as the thread title suggests "effectively banned". We were discussing how the exact same thing can happen and has happened in parts of the US. It can happen anywhere, and many places have never legalized it to begin with. Why can't we talk about that as well, because they are all current directly related to the fact that this happened in Poland. Focus on what's relevant. From where I was reading, nothing was irrelevant. I wasn't the only one who got several posts deleted.
