Concerned about election unrest, Beverly Hills will close Rodeo Drive
Santa Monica Police chief stepping down amid anger over protests
This morning I researched Christmas Past, at least as it pertains to our presidential elections. I've always had a fascination with the decade prior to my birth so I viewed a YouTube video of the November 1960 election returns of John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon. CBS NEWS with anchor Walter Cronkite broadcasted results as they came-in, helped by a revolutionary transistor-powered IBM 7090 computer half the size of a room. It was still an era of B&W television with wholesome two-parent families and well-behaved children, huddled in their living rooms in front of a vacuum-tube magic box.
While I don't imagine that we as a society will ever return to that naive and idealistic "Camelot" Kennedy vision of America, neither did I think that our November elections would include a para-military ramp-up by police and (possibly) national guard. In Santa Monica (Ca.) Cynthia Renard, a PTA woman heretofore promoted from her bake sale duties to those impersonating a police chief, was unceremoniously dumped in-favor of someone who more resembles a macho, commando style Florida sheriff. Beware looters who try to rob an athletic store for Nike shoes or Dodger World Series memorabilia. Over in Beverly Hills an entire battalion of troops are preparing to cordon off a large perimeter of high-end stores on Rodeo Drive, reinforced by rotorcraft air power and cutting-edge EM 50 Urban Assault Vehicles. Los Angeles County Sheriff personnel have taken Advanced Officer Tactical Training Courses in how to fire rubber bullets with compassion.
All in advance of next Tuesday's elections.
