Well, actually, it depends on the numers and sample size. For example, the average of 1, 2, and 3 is "2", and the median of those same numbers is also 2. I may not be that great at math, but I can still be a nitpicking nazi! :tongue:

Maxcok, I know that we have disagreed in the past, but your statement quoted below really resonates with me. I feel something akin to despair about the condition of our country.

To site only one situation, the effects of the decision in Citizens United and related cases are beginning to be seen already. George Bush's Supreme Court and other judicial appointments are the gift that will keep on giving, as if he hadn't screwed us enough already.

I don't claim to know the specific solutions to our problems but the citizens of the United States need to WAKE THE FUCK UP!

We have only strongly disagreed on one very personal issue to my recollection. I believe you are educable and capable of evolving on that issue, and therefore capable of and ultimately worthy of redemption. :wink:

For myself, I am beyond despair about this state of affairs. I periodically mention that the fallout from SCOTUS decision is the one fundamental issue that supercedes and determines the fate of all others. Any movement on other issues is tinkering around the edges while "government of the people, by the people, for the people" is being stripped away from us for good. The problem is self-perpetuating and expanding, and unless meaningful campaign financing restrictions are enacted in this or the next Congress it will be irreversible.

Not to seriously address this immediately, head on, and in no uncertain terms means that our elected officials and therefore our government will henceforth be bought and sold by corporate interests forever. You think it's bad now? You ain't seen nuthin. There is very little Congress can do about this now, even if it had the will. The Republicans in service to their corporate masters will do everything they can to stop it, AS THEY JUST DID, by blocking Democrat sponsored disclosure requirements for donations from corporations and other special interest groups. It may already be too late; the results of the midterm elections will tell the tale.

I feel like I'm shouting into the wind when I talk about this, and frankly, I think it's pretty hopeless. I do not expect the American people to "wake up"; they are too busy pursuing some mythic 'American dream' based on unbridled overconsumption while being entertained into ignorance and submission. As long as they have their "Bread and Circuses" I seriously doubt they're going to rise up and demand their government back, misguided teabagger whackos notwithstanding. Even if they did, the forces that manipulate and "inform" them are overwhelmingly powerful and ruthless.

Sorry to sound so utterly pessimistic; I did not come to this point willingly or easily. If anyone has any suggestions about what we as citizens can effectively do to change the status quo, I'm all ears. If you're interested, I've posted on this theme a number of times, most recently here, and in the wayback machine here, when the SCOTUS decision first came down in January and I was a mere noob, in this most informative and emotional thread: US Supreme Court legalizes bribery. So far, things seem to be developing exactly as planned and predicted.

Don't know how relevant this is to this thread, but it occurred to be a little while ago that the U.S. Constitution states that there shall be no religious test for office.

As for Obama himself? He was probably the best of a bad set of options at your last election. So far all he's really done is follow the script that bankrupts America, just as Bush did before him. Just as, it must be said, whoever replaces him will do too.

There's no real difference between Republican and Democrat, whether candidate or voter. What's amusing is the way in which they hurl metaphorical faeces at each other highlighting some perceived absurdity that could as easily be indicated in their own side. A pox on both their houses.

I've been spending the better part of the day catching up on what happened at the Glenn Beck hosted rally in Washington, DC yesterday, and wow...people are strange.

The islamophobia, homophobia, and racism that runs deep in the bloodline of conservative, Christian voters is completely disgusting and deeply disturbing.
