Biden and Trump are going neck and neck in the polls.

I think Trump is going to win. I think I've said that before. He is going to win reelection.

If Biden loses is it the end of the Democratic centrist? That wing of the party would have lost twice in a row. Will the Progressives take over in 2024?

The national polls maybe but not the state polls where the presidency is won or lost thanks to the Electoral College.

National polls were pretty good in the 2016 presidential election which is what the CNN poll is using, but state-level polling was fairly poor (although still within the “normal” range of accuracy). And that’s why the many models all had Hillary winning.

That said no one knows how voter suppression, Russian meddling, USPS meddling and COVID will play out.

And there’s little evidence what America will vote for is a real leftist progressive candidate. Every time they fail. Bernie couldn’t make it out of the primaries....twice. The best you can hope for is a center candidate with a leftward lean. I wish it were different but here we are.

Democrats and other Biden supporters should NOT rely on the Polls! Do not become complacent like you did in 2016!

My fear is that 2016 will be compounded in 2020. Biden wins the popular vote with ten million vote margin of victory, but comes slightly short of 270 electoral votes making Trump president a second term.

If Biden should lead Trump by 58 % to 42 % in the popular vote nationally and Trump win the Electoral college, there will be bedlam in the streets. This is mathematically possible to do.

I can't get out of my head that lesson on the Roman Empire titled, "The End of the Roman Republic." Augustus and his army rolled into the city of Rome and Rome was never a republic again. The Emperor was totalitarian from that point forward until Rome totally collapsed in 476.

Please don't tell me that Trump's middle name is Augustus or Caesar!

The Polls are completely unreliable and are not accounting for Trump supporters who won't even talk to them. If you think Biden is a shoe-in, I have three words for you: Two Thousand Sixteen

There is no such thing as the “shy Trump voter.” They shout it from the rooftops. What there are plenty of is the shy Republican Biden voter.

This comparison doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The crossing of the Rubicon was outright illegal (JC did not have a position that authorized him to exercise imperium within Italy), and disobeying direct orders from the Senate (which was the seat of sovereignty in the Roman republic). If the incumbent wins the 2020 US presidential election by a few electoral votes, but a considerable popular vote deficit, this would still be a fully legal election, in accordance with our federal constitution.

You are correct. My fear is what Trump may do to destroy the American Republic in his second term.

This is Freddie's fear. Malakos may be positive that won't happen. The answer will not be found in this thread in 2020.

The LPSG is a wonderful place. The LPSG does not control the future.

What I see in Trump is the personality of an authoritarian ruler. Trump has referred to wanting to be president for life or for serving a third term. Who knows. Perhaps one of the other Trump's runs in 2024.

There is a major difference between fact and opinion although sometimes fact and opinion seem to blur a bit.

In 2024, we will know the answer and perhaps not until then.

Again, I respect that you have a different opinion of what Trump wants to do.

Hopefully we will both be alive, kicking and still in the Politics forum come 2024.

Not... exactly. I don't really share your suspicions. But it's not like I have faith in the man and believe he's here to do what's best for America. It's just that it appears as bravado to me, and of what little I know about him, I could easily see it being only that. I think he wants to do whatever will best promote the interests of his family and their image, and I doubt that trying to extend his office beyond clear constitutional limits would most readily serve that end.

You may be correct. No one really knows. Trump has some legal issues that are staying on the back burner as long as he is president.

And, he has been quoted talking about a third term or president for life. Sometimes it is difficult to determine when Trump is shooting the bull because of his personality or if he is being serious. Trump has mental and emotional issues which make predicting what he will do sometimes tricky.
