The reason Obama didn't pick Hillary had nothing to do with her being female. For one thing, we don't know that she wanted it. For another -- the main strike against her was the money that Bill has raised from shady sources since leaving the White House.

Of course it's not Hillary's "responsibility" to help out the Obama campaign. But she's a Democrat. If she wants a future in the leadership of the Democratic Party, she has to be willing to help Obama now. That's just the way it works, regardless of gender.

And now, for the first time, there's a task in this election for which Hillary is clearly the most capable person -- making the argument that Sarah Palin is not the political ally most Ameican women. She is a religous fundamentalist with *extremely* right-wing economic policies that would take us back to the age of the Robber Barons.

From a pure strategy perspective, it's difficult for Obama or Biden to make that argument without seeming defensive or churlish. But Hillary could do it, and if she's a loyal Democrat she will.

Ironically, the only way Hillary has a future in this party is if Obama loses. She can't run against him in 2012, and she'll be 68 in 2016 (and by then Obama will have fucked up the country so badly no Democrat will ever be elected again). She's putting on a show of support for Obama so that people won't call her a traitor, but you're fooling yourself if you think she actually WANTS Obama to win.

And deep inside, many of her supporters know this. Would a 76 year-old, weakened John McCain really stand a chance against Hillary in 2012? Would it be worth putting up with four more years of Republican rule to get Hillary in the White House? Unless the answer to that question is 100% no, the Democrats are losing voters they've always been able to count on before.

Again Trinity makes sense. I think the only chance obama has at this point is if the democratic party can mobilize a super unprecedented number of young voters to swing the election in the states needed to swing it. And unfortunately, I would guess that this age group is the least reliable come election day. I'd rather do push ups at this point.

Hey Skull

I don't think that is going to happen. The Obama campaign has abandoned its "50 State Strategy" that Howard Dean practically bankrupted the DNC to begin with and Obama took over the DNC with by dragging it to Chicago with the intention to 'paint the Electoral Map Blue.' The Obama Campaign has pulled their people from Georgia and other red states and are now focusing on a handful of battleground states that are so tight that the Yahoo Electoral Map has McCain and Obama with 250 electoral votes respectively. Several states Hillary Clinton won handily and would have wiped the floor with McCain are up for grabs with Obama at the helm.

Obama was registering and increasing the African American vote mainly in those red states. Yes, the youth are historically unrealiable but so are first time voters period. Plus...time is running out...there are probably like 15 days to register someone for the Presidential Election if they want to vote...IF they even vote.

No, first time voters registered at the last minute won't do it...and unless the youth voters do something they have never done before, they won't do it either. Obama is losing ground among Independents and the White Working Class in all of the Battleground states. He's got to win them back from the McCain/Palin appeal...and there is nothing Obama can say about any issue that will do that even if he were able to get back on message.

The youth voters HAVE done it before. Are you forgetting the unprecedented number of "young" and "first time" voters who came out during the Democratic Primary? The are thinking, like a lot of us, Not this time, not this year, the stakes are too high!

I believe McCain will win as well. Imo, a combination of fear, apathy, and complacency prevents the nation from progressing politically.

I just figured out what Obama can do to change the momentum and send Sarah Palin scurrying back to her "Christian refuge" state with her tail between her legs.

It's time for another one of his epic speeches, like the one on race that had people comparing him to MLK earlier this year.

The topic of this one: Girls and American Culture.

He begins by saying he has two daughers who will soon become teenagers, and that this keeps him up nights, because when he hears the lyrics of rap songs, sees the sexual content in today's video games, and considers the ubiquity of internet porn, he fears that teens today live in a world where boys learn to prey on girls, and many girls learn to accept their position as prey. Where too many girls grow up believing that they have nothing to offer the world but their bodies. And where an apalling number suffer from sexual abuse, anorexia, bulimia and self-mutilation.

He hits the entertainment industry, especially hiphop, harder than any other Democratic politician ever has. He compares today's big rap stars to the old Vaudeville performers who wore blackface, accusing them of selling degrading images of black people to a mostly white audience.

He challenges parents to teach their sons the old courtesies and chivalries that American boys used to show to girls, and to make sure their daughters have the strength and the self-esteem to resist the negative messages bombarding them.

Then he makes some specific policy proposals to match the theme of his speech. He should enthusiastically support the death penalty for child molesters, even if they don't kill their victims. And he should say that every parent should have the right to choose an all-boys or all-girls public school for their children.

This is something no politician has ever dared talk about before, although the issues are before them in countless policy papers and public health reports. If Obama did this he would make ridiculous the idea that voting for McCain/Palin is some kind of feminist answer to Hillary's defeat, and he would give independent-minded evangelicals another reason to consider voting for him. Most importantly, his message would resonate with almost everyone who is the parent of a young girl.

If any of Obama's people are reading this, I will work for cheap!

Amusingly, in-house LPSG pundit wannabes who have been proven wrong again and again continue not only to make predictions, but with that cocksure attitude too.

The election is in November. This may seem very close. However this is a life time in politics. Things can change in one day. I look at this election in a positive way. We will have the first black president or we will have the first woman V.P.

Indeed. Almost 8 weeks left; enough time for the tide to turn hundreds of times.

Still, even before the Palin phenom, I was amazed that a man derided by some as GWB III could garner the support of such a huge chunk of electorate.

One would expect for Obama to be at 60-70% in national polls, considering the disastrous legacy of the Bush years.

I'm not scared at all. The type of bounce McCain got amounts to a "base" bounce. This will have a shelf life of about 4 weeks (with some polls already starting to correct).

The debates will take care of the rest when the two candidates finally sit down and discuss issues that matter instead of McCain shooting spitballs at Obama like he has for the last month.

Spitballs NEVER last longer than the time it took to launch them (ask Hillary).

In politics, "if you're explaining...you're losing." Obama has been explaining everyday. And Joe Biden too (or crying )
Following your flawed logic, Senator McCain and Governor Palin have had to explain her lack of knowledge regarding world geopolitics as evidenced in the Gibson interview, and the gals of the "View" had McCain explaining why he is lying in his campaign ads. The gals of "The View" have more "balls" than the rest of the Mainstream media!
