A common term: Gay & Lesbian.

Ummm...aren't lesbians gay and therefore included under the term 'gay'? So isn't it a redundant concept like...."Coins & nickels" or "farm animals & cows"? Think about it.

Yes! I totally agree. And don't forget that the appelation "Lesbians" allows people to say "oh they're not GAY they're "Lesbians"

Yes he was. But he just moves the date everytime he gets to it. I think he is doing it as a kind of performance art, or something. He moves the deadline everytime he passes it. Then he watches all the idiots who have no life, scream at each other in the review section of his booklet on Amazon. It's pure genius.

Don't forget:

"Be that as it may..."
"Lets open a dialog with Joe about it", (when you mean, "lets talk to joe about it.")
or worse, "Let's interface with Joe about it."
"Value added"

Mostly I hate all forms of "corporate mellow-speak".

Speaking of "corporate speak", here's one to throw around if u want to make people think you know what you're talking about:

"Disaggregate the data"

Flip side of the coin dept: "Conversate"

Paradigm. Goddammit, I got sick to death of that word in corporatespeak. I started saying "What is that, like twenty cent?" ("s" left off for effect).

Other than that, I love quotes that people attribute to the Bible that don't actually appear there, at least not the way WE say them. Example: (this is not an exact quote) Bible says "The measure you use to judge your brothers is the same measure your Father in heaven will use to judge you". Our translation: "Judge not less ye be judged". Not the same at all! It doesn't say not to judge, but to judge YOURSELF with the same measure as you judge others, because God will. Seriously, how could you honestly get through life without making judgements? You would be a seriously stunted individual.

These sayings never comfort me:

1. What you don't know can't hurt you.

2. Don't worry, it'll be OK

3. Everything will be just fine.

4. It's the thought that counts.

5. Eat your ruffage.

6. Now this isn't going to hurt.

"Out of pocket" for unavailable. As in, "I will be flying to Memphis tomorrow so I will be out of pocket." This is a corporatespeak thing. I find it almost creepy.

Any netspeak used verbally

"BRB" - just say be right back please.
"LOL" - I'm in the same room, I heard you laugh. I don't need it spelled out.

"tehe" or "hehe" - I don't care who you are, if I hear this verbalized I'll reassess your inteligence to that of a four year old girl.

Sorry, but the third one I believe in even when there is good parenting.

JA, I think I always "heard" something else when someone used the "it takes a village" phrase - I understood it to mean, not that the whole village directly raises the child, but that the parents need a support system as much as the children do. I think most people misinterpret the phrase to mean that a child should be raised by everyone except the parents.

Ah, and "drugs & alcohol" always makes me cringe.

All of the corporate "trendyterms" are annoying. When I was in the business, I had a clueless manager (she truly was the pointy-haired boss come to life) she could not get through a business meeting without using every single trite phrase she could remember. We didn't DARE play buzzword bingo - one of us would have been yelling bingo before she finished her second sentence. She was so proud of herself when she learned to pronounce "paradigm" without the "g".

When I worked for Southwest Airlines, my trainer forbade the use of "okay" and "please hold." Say it any other way, just don't say "okay" (it sounds too informal, say 'alright' or something else) or "please hold" (no one wants to hold, instead say "one moment please" or "I'll be right back with you.")

My all-time least favorite saying is "family values."

These would be a few of ones that to me should go, as I see it.

1. " Get with the program "

2. " Get on with it "

and any other stupid saying that leads other to follow in other words do not feel free to think.

You surely have hear the saying " If you aren't the lead dog the view never changes." who want to watch someone's ass hole. At least all the time. lol

3. " Trends point toward "

4. " Statistic data says "

5. " If history says this, that, or anything."

oh goodness I could go on, on and on, just anything used to nauseate.

Yes, that is exactly what I mean by it, too. A support system of caring adults in the community is very important in raising a child, even when the child has excellent parenting. Parents can certainly raise a child in total isolation, and children can be raised in a Kibbutz. If I had to choose between those non-optimum extremes, I would choose the Kibbutz.

"Its not the size, but how you use it"...sorry, couldn't resist!

"Time heals all wounds" and wounds accumulate over time.

My all time favourite, which makes me want to pierce the person's nipple, thread it with fish line, attach it to a ball, and give the person a rottweiler puppy: "There is no crime problem in South Africa" easy for politicians to say when they have bodyguards etc.
