I'm in the process of looking for another place I can stay without having to sign a lease, and I get this response from a guy offering me to stay at his place rent free (even though I'm offering to pay $350/month). He sends me this message, which I suspect is just a check fraud scheme.

Please read and let me know if you think this is a scam...

    What do you think?

I would be VERY careful with this. If it is true, tell someone the adress so they know where you are.
He says 'I would love your passport' indicating identity theft.

    be careful

Just the busticated English ALONE screams scam! SCAM! These people need to be taken 'out back' and shot.

I make it a hard and fast rule to not even acknowledge an email sent to me if it doesn't use a good majority of proper English.

Thanks peeps, this was my suspicion all along. After paying rent on a apt for 10 years, the thought of "not" having to pay rent was a little exciting, even if just for a moment. What a rush!....oh well, back to reality now:)

It's ID fraud and money laundering. RUN, don't walk, away from this one. Don't even reply.

Yes it is a scam. I know I get these emails all the time too. I am sure they can be traced.....but it would probably take some effort to do so.

Anything that involves bank transactions unless you are the one initiating it.......is a scam. That is their mode of operation. From what I have heard......they will issue you a phony check and by the time you deposit it......and discover that it is phony they will wipe out your bank account. And then they will swipe your identity and open up all kinds of accounts other places. And you will have a horrible time cleaning up the mess.

You also don't give out other personal information over the phone or over the Internet......The con artists can swipe your identy that way too.

I'm glad you chose to run, his lack of proper English despite saying he works in France is the first thing that caught my eye. Then the ridiculous game thing lol.

Better yet, actually do it without telling him so that a proper sting can be done and the idiot caught.
