just curious. I've been admonished a couple of times for posting in a ask a "whomever" thread because I'm not a "whomever", but there seems to be a lot of that happening. there is a particular "ask a trans person" question I want to respond to, but don't want to get my hand slapped

Hello, the issue you're talking about has been discussed extensively and the conclusion always comes back to leave the 'ask a.. ' section where it is.

There are many reasons for this, but mostly it comes down to the wishes of the thread starter, and those wishes were to ask that specific group. This should be respected, as you would wish your wishes to be respected as well.

don't misunderstand me, I am not advocating change, just consistency.

Richard, what s the rule for Ask a Straight Man responses? It seem that as long as the respondent is 1% "straight" their responses are allowed. Shouldn't be at least 95-100% straight to be able to answer questions in that forum?

Historically, LPSG has operated on the 80/20 percent rule.

Want to post in Ask a Straight Man? Your percentages must be at least 80% straight.

Want to post in Ask a Gay Man? Your percentages must be at least 80% gay.

And if you receive a reminder for posting in the wrong Ask a Section, it spells out the percentages. It's an oversight that was inadvertently not included in the update rules. I have tagged in the Admin folks to this reply to alert them of the need to make that tweak to that rule.

@Mr. LPSG @LPSG Richard @LPSG Simon

Thanks! :)

Shouldn't it be if you want to respond to a post in Ask a Straight Man? I don't care who poses a question, but the 80/20 rule should apply to who can respond. Thanks!

Good point!

Here's the Rule about Ask a Section Postings as it currently reads:
  • Post an “Ask a [Blank]” thread or post a response in the same, unless you are a member of the group named the thread title.

For the purposes of these "Ask a" sections, we consider bisexual to be 80/20 gay/straight or straight/gay. Likewise for straight and gay identified members, we consider that these each correspond to the 80/20 rule as well (for example, straight-identified people would be up to 80% straight on our scale. 79% and under would be considered bisexual for these purposes).
So as it reads now, you technically cannot post in Ask a Section unless you are a Member of that particular Section.

I do know that previous to the Rules being revised, it was not an issue with who started the thread in what Ask A Section. It looks like that was changed when the Rules were revised a few months ago.

@LPSG Simon: Can we get you to tweak this Rule to add in that anyone may start a thread in an Ask a Section forum, but only those who belong to that group can respond to that thread, unless you were the thread starter?

Please and thanks! :)

Yes, the rules always were that anyone should be able to ask a question in any of the Ask a ... forums, but only those that are in the forum title group can respond. Ask a woman? Only women respond, Ask a Gay man? Only gay men should respond, etc. etc. In Ask a Straight man the 80/20 straight/(anything else) is okay if it is consistent across the appropriate forums.

Thanks again!
