I'm not familiar with how Roman Catholics view the death penalty. Maybe enlighten the assembled masses?

Basically, capital punishment is only justified if it's the ONLY way to stop a person from committing more crimes. Because modern prison systems (at least in the U.S.) are enough to hold a convict for life, there's essentially no reason to execute someone. If you were in a place where there was a sufficient risk that the convict would prove to be a reasonable threat, then an argument can be made in favor or execution.

For example, you could argue that Saddam Hussein would remain a threat if he were alive in an Iraqi prison. (though, that's not to say that the Church would favor a death penalty for him--that's just my own example.)

My argument in favor of capital punishment is that I don't think it's fair that the victim's family should have to pay taxes to feed, clothe, house, and provide medical care to the person who killed their loved one. Even if it's just a fraction of a cent. On principle, it's not right.

On the other hand . . . . my religion tells me it's almost always wrong to put someone to death.

Well, for what it's worth, it's a no win situation because some of the families of murder victims don't want their tax dollars to fund the execution of the offender.

Just a lil perspective to throw in.

It's also a slippery slope.

Because the next arguemtn after capital punishment is that life without parole is also "inhumane." And believe me, I know because I've worked with these people, literally sat at meeting tabels with them, that the elimination of life without parole is next on their list of reforms.

Very interesting. While I am in favor of capital punishment, there is no coherent argument that it is the only way to prevent future crime...

For the child molester, there's always beheading.
Oh....but no. (why is this bold?) I can't make it not be bold. Did you ever watch "Dirk Gently..." It's awesome. I love Bart. She's one of my all time cavorite characters in anything. Anyways, the argument is that all criminals are the product of their backgrounds. A child molester is sick and needs help, not punishment. Savvy?

Here's something else--besides being not bold anymore--if you look at the ABA American Bar Assn guidelines for capital defense, a capital defense counsel is supposed to look at ALL mitigating circumstances in a defendant's life---INCLUDING anything that happened to him/her from the moment of conception. Weird, isn't it? Kinda throws a monkey wrench into the whole pro-life/pro-choice argument if the ABA instructs defense counsel to consider a defendant's life from that point onward. But I digress. And I gotta take a piss.

The Defense is tasked with doing ONE and only one job. It is for the Jury to fin the person Not Guilty. That doesn’t say the he or she didn’t do the crime, just that the Prosecution couldn’t prove their case. As far as the cold molester case, the Catholic Church has been shielding Priests’ for decades. Those PRICKS should have been given sentences in General population in prison and unique forms of jailhouse justice would have been taken care of.

Amazing that even some of the worst of the worst have their certain ethics. Wasn’t it the Mafia that initially wouldn’t go after the wives and children?

I believe that a small amount of murders’ families agree with your position. Some people do forgive, no question about it. Me? I’d want a front row seat to the lethal injection. I might be in the minority. I hope I am never in a situation that this subject was in front of me.

The newest BULLSHIT is when the President and First Lady visited the hospital in Vegas. Thomas Gunderson who was shot in the leg, stood up when the President entered his room. Some news organizations are criticizing him and comparing this to the NFL player who decided to take a knee. People are FUCKING CRAZY, that's part of the problem in the world. CRAZY !

No. I'm not going to pray for Vegas.
Guns are the problem. Praying is not the answer.

Now don't you dare put blame on an inanimate object, you silly goose. You should know better. Guns don't kill people, people do!

Don't blame nuclear weapons, either. Don't you dare dare put such horrible blame on weapon designed to kill thousands in one clip.

My new t-shirt logo: Nuclear weapons don't kill people, people do!:D
