I’ve read a lot of conflicting information and wondered if anyone else has had any experience of this?

I’m married with a mortgage and have life insurance to cover that should the worst happen… I’m in the process of getting PrEP and obviously will need to inform the insurance company as I will then be taking medication.

Will it affect my premium?

try finding out anonymously first - either go to faq on your insurers webpage or maybe one of the gay advice lines and see what they say?

once you've declared it you've declared it.

I'd hope not - i'm old enough to remember when if you declared even that you were gay they'd simply not accept you and then its on your file forever saying you'd been declined!!

At the end of the day though most insurance is risk based 'on average' so they might exclude certain conditions from your cover rather than increase premiums -so if you want to be 'covered' in all eventualities you might have no option but to pay more?

let us all know how you get on?

Dave, I can only answer this from a USA perspective. I work in the HIV field and when you apply for life insurance here, you give written permission to the company to review your medical records. If PrEP was prescribed by your primary physician here, that becomes part of your medical record. There are other options to get PrEP, that may keep it out of your records, but bear in mind that the info is not always something you can hide. Things may be entirely different in your country.

works the same in the UK, may be different if you already have the cover in place and just deciding whether to disclose this new information though.

No, it should not affect your premium any more than taking any other medication designed to prevent a chronic medical condition. Some insurers resisted covering PrEP due to the cost, but now that Truvada is available as a generic, the cost is negligible as compared to most other prescriptions. You may also be able to obtain PrEP from a gay community clinic or other provider rather than through your primary care or NHS provider if you're still concerned.
