Priest who broke celibacy vow joins Episcopal Church

(CNN) -- Father Alberto Cutie, an internationally known Catholic priest who admitted having a romantic affair and breaking his vow of celibacy, is joining the Episcopal Church to be with the woman he loves, he said Thursday. "I will always love the Catholic Church and all its members," he said at a news conference. "But I want to start today by going into a new family. "Here before this community where I have chosen to serve and where I live, I am going to continue to proclaim the word of God and my love for God," Cutie said.Cutie (pronounced koo-tee-AY) was received into the Episcopal Church earlier Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Miami, Florida. He will pursue the priesthood in the Episcopalian faith, the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida said in a written statement.

It was not immediately clear how long the process would take. Cutie -- sometimes called "Father Oprah" because of the advice he's given in Spanish-language media -- shocked the Catholic community when photographs of him embracing a bathing-suit-clad woman emerged this month in the pages of TV Notas magazine. The Cuban-American priest admitted having a two-year relationship with the woman, a long-time friend. She has not been publicly identified. "This is something I've struggled with," he said this month. "I don't support the breaking of the celibacy promise." Of his relationship with the woman, he said, "Through the photos, it looked like a frivolous thing on the beach, you know, and that's not what it is. It's something deeper than that." After the photographs surfaced, Cutie was removed from his duties at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Miami Beach and on the Radio Paz and Radio Peace Networks.
Father Cutie gets to have his cake and eat it too. So much for there being some sort of lesson learned by this for him.

Good on him.

The Episcopal Church accepts gays, so I think he's made a good choice . Seems like a step up even.

Grrrr, :irked: You idiots are supposed to click on the link and read the full story! :angryfire2: If you had, you would know that this priest is NOT GAY! He is 100% heterosexual and is having an affair with an adult woman.

I know he is heterosexual, but I obviously wasn't clear. I just meant that I'm happy he chose a church that does in fact accept gays; I wasn't trying to imply that he was gay.

.. the Episcopal Church takes another one for the group.

Well. As a societal one I can tell you that the church is often inclusive and has (through no intent of Henry VIII) blazed the path for positive change in this society. With this turn of events and the controversy around Bishop Robinson in New Hampshire I suspect the Roman Catholics will have at us more than ever.

Ah me.

To expect any human being irrespective of sexual orientation to be celebate is a recipe for failure. Was the Roman church to allow their own to marry it would have certainly headed off the influx of homosexual gay men who thought they could pray it out of them by joining the priesthood thus saving us that vile pedophilia thing several years ago here in Boston.

We can see people beheaded and bludgeoned on network television as a matter of course but heaven forbid we see a tit, a penis, or anyone fucking.

It's bloody preposterous.

We - generally - fear sex as a group. It's the legacy of this Judao-Christian society in which we find ourselves. It's precisely where homophobia finds its roots (and its present momentum) too in the States.

:eek:fftopic: It was such a simple and clearly stated article why did so many people feel the need to bring gays into it? Thereby completely misconstruing the intent of the article and my post.

I was merely stating that I think this has worked out in his favour because his new church is much more accepting than his old one.

Good on him.
