I read a book by Gore Vidal where he said that rape in male prisons is so common, and yet so ignored by the authorities in the prison, that Gore Vidal thinks rape could actually be considered a form of state-sanctioned punishment for crime.
That aside, I agree with what you wrote below. If anything, sexual abuse usually turns people away from the gender of the people who were abuser. My sister is a lesbian, and something I've noticed is that most of her girlfriends throughout her life have been abused by men at some point; one of my sister's ex-girlfriends was even raped by two of her brothers.
In prison, men continue to be men, which means they are interested in sex. Because there are no women around, they often turn to men. In prison, the tough straight guys become the "tops," and the submissive guys who aren't as tough become the "bottoms."
One of my cousins was for some reason attracted to men who were constantly in and out of prison. I asked her if any of her boyfriends admitted to gay sex while in prison. My cousin said, "Well, no man I've ever met who has been to prison will admit to gay sex himself, but they all 'know someone else' who did have gay sex."
There's an aspect of male sexuality where it goes beyond pleasure and is more about dominance. I think this is how straight guys justify raping other straight guys in prison; it's not so much about sexuality and enjoying sex, but more about dominance and humiliation. (By the way, remember those pictures from the Iraq prison torture scandal? Many of those pictures were about sexual humiliation.) I've read that in Latin America it is common for the macho straight men to rape the gay men, and then say, "Well, he wanted it because he's such a fag." It's an odd way of engaging in homosexual behavior but then blaming it on the gay guy, all the while maintaining that oneself is straight.
Another anecdote. My sister's brother-in-law was a career criminal, in and out of prison; more of his adult life in prison than out (drug dealer, other various crimes). My sister said to me, "When he's in prison he lets the fags blow him." While he was out of prison, he was heterosexual, had several children, and several women. But I guess when you are horny and in an all-male environment with no other alternatives, you will allow a man to blow you.
Oh yeah. Gore Vidal also wrote that a team of European specialists did a survey of US prisons a while back and found them the most barbaric of any prison system of any developed nation.
If anything being forced into gay sex, especially as an adult, would seemingly turn you further away from something that wasn't originally appealing anyway. If this guy's now kissing on guys it's highly likely he was doing (or wanting to do) it before but nobody ever caught him. Heck I could be forced into sex with the hottest woman in the world and can assure you it wouldn't turn me straight. The appeal and desire is simply not there. If you're thinking it can really happen you might suggest one of your buddies try it out on you and see if it causes you to suddenly find men attractive - believe me it won't. Men in prison turn to other men for sex because it is all that's available. Once they return to the civilian population they return to following the desires that are normal for them.
