I had it done about 3 weeks ago.

Background: At a work related physical exam, the doctor noted an enlarged prostate for my age, but said his fingers were too short to feel the whole thing and urged me to see my primary doctor to have it checked throughly/referred to urology.

My doctor examined me and had the same opinion, so she ordered PSA and referred me to urology.

PSA was negative. Urologist said sometimes PSA are false negative, but his concern was not the size of prostate; he was concerned about a lump he felt, so he ordered biopsy. He also wanted to probe urethra with a camera to check my bladder, but I declined.

Biopsy day: They had me lay on my left side and curl up as much as I could into a fetal position. They lubed me up and inserted a camera on what had to be an unnecessarily large stick and then began the injections, which they described would be like you'd get for dental work...and each one stung like hell. The doctor wanted to collect 12 samples, but stopped at 6 or 7...I lost count, but they said they got enough to test. The last one was excruciatingly painful and I made it known. Either the anesthetic wore off of there wasn't enough spread out, but I felt every bit of the clipper chopping a piece off, sounding like an electric stapler. The whole procedure was very uncomfortable.

The doctor left and the nurse had me lay there for about 10 minutes, then she had me get up and sit on a towel covered chair for another 10 minutes or so, but she left me alone at that point. An attractive nurse (who wasn't involved in the procedure) then came in and asked me how I was doing, so I told her it felt like my pelvis was on fire and it felt like I was oozing some thing from my penis, so she said, "Let's have a look." I showed her and she said, "It looks good." Then she told me, "When you go home, lay down on your side or stomach as much as possible (to lessen the burning feeling and limit bleeding)." Also, when I stood up to show her my stuff, there was no blood on the towel I was sitting on, so she said that was a good sign because most have lots of bleeding when they first sit after this procedure. She was right, though, the more I was upright, the more everything hurt. Laying on my stomach evened things out pretty well.

Discharge instructions said to drink lots of water because I'd be bleeding from both ends. There were bloody scabs in the urine, one for each staple click. Slightly stinging feeling, but not too much more than you'd get if you're dehydrated and taking a leak. After urinating, there was a bit of bloody dripping.

They said this could last 1 week and that's about what it was, although the burning pelvis feeling lasted a little longer and strangely came and went a few times. Prostate pressure still comes and goes, sometimes painful.

They also said no sexual activity for 2 weeks to allow prostate to heal, and to expect blood in ejaculate for up to 6 weeks. I asked about this and if it would be painful. They told me it would be a feeling of pressure internally. Well, they said that with the anesthesia and sample taker too, but that hurt a lot more than just a little pressure. On follow up, I also asked if blood in ejaculate meant small traces here and there and the doc said, "No, it will be bloody, but it's probably a good idea for you to go ahead and take care of yourself to clean it out." He also said there'd be frequent feelings of pressure and possible burning sensation of the prostate for about 6 weeks after the biopsy.

Has anyone had any problems after going through this procedure? I haven't had any release since about a week before the biopsy. Night time erections and precum, but no blood and no pain...nervous about doing anything to completion, though.

Biopsy results were completely negative; said it's just an enlarged prostate (no more mention of the mysterious lump), but since I'm not complaining about urinary symptoms, there's no treatment necessary, just routine check-up with primary doctor.

I'm not a man so I haven't had this experience...I sincerely hope that the results are good. Sounds like quite an ordeal. Wish I could give you a hug....Carmen

I had a 42 year old friend go through biopsy if prostate. He said the painful part was the wait to release. But the first time ejaculation after did not hurt. I think your pain was a failure of anesthetic getting where it needed. Jack as soon as you are allowed and don't expect any problems.

sounded so traumatic, i do feel for you
sincerely hope the rest of your recovery goes well, the best to you ..
sorry i have no experiences to share

I had a prostate biopsy and it led to me having retrograde ejaculation in which my cum volume was dramatically reduced. It has come back a little but still less than half of before the procedure. I was not happy but there is nothing that can be done about it.

It's really good to exchange experiences on these male health topics. Good job, guys.

The doctor offered a medication for BPH, which he said would/could cause delayed and/or retrograde ejaculation...I declined because I already take too long (I'm told) and I wouldn't want a reduced or eliminated volume.

Did they take many samples? How long after the procedure did you have a release? In the blog link below, guys are saying they did it a couple of days after the biopsy. I was told specifically and in writing to avoid sexual activity for 2 weeks.

I asked about erections and precum (which I mentioned in the OP) and the nurse told me that obviously can't be helped but that erections won't be harmful and the pre-ejaculate may have a little blood in it; I haven't seen any blood yet, but as I'm still nervous about ejaculating blood - might have to use the fleshlight so I won't see the horror show.

I wish I'd have read more on this before having it done, as it seems that prostate biopsies are only 1% accurate?

I asked the staff if there was a less invasive way to do this, to which I was told, "If there were a better way, we'd be doing it that way."

I just had a laser resection for BPH three weeks ago. I had kidney stones in March. The doctor found a precancerous tumor in my bladder in the process. Then when he went back in, inside the office he found one in my penis. He said my prostate was way to tight and needed surgery at that time. Back to the hospital for BPH surgery and more thorough UT inspection. He ended up removing two tumors from my penis and removing the blockages from my prostate. He also said I had had blockage for a long time. It was starting to cause my kidneys to fail. Guys I had put it off as long as I could stand. My advice is don't delay get it checked with the dreaded rectal exam and PSA and more if you have symptoms. My rectal exam was normal (multiple doctors) as well as my PSA. If I had said nothing I would have lost my kidneys. I don't ejaculate anymore but the pleasure is still there. Take care of business guys.

Thank you for writing your post. I am glad women are so vocal about breast cancer -- AND I wish men would adopt some of their PR magic about prostate-bladder related problems. Anywhooo -- good for you for putting this reminder out there. Young or old -- you can get prostate cancer, bladder infections that will build and disrupt your entire life, etc. Go to the doctor for your exams and PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BODY.

Good advice, all. I've recently had a prostate, bladder, kidney ultrasound. They saw everything they needed to see without an invasive procedure.

Sorry to hear about the negative aspects of the prostate biopsy above, guys. Let's keep exchanging information about all of these topics. Far more needs to be said and read.

I had a prostrate biopsy January 2009 at 55 years old. I am thankful that my results were negative. So I can honestly say I feel your pain. ;)

I have an enlarged prostrate and my then primary care doc monitored my PSA and got concerned when it began to creep up over 5-6 years. Urologist was skeptical of doc's concern, and upon a digital exam, opined that he would be surprised if it came back positive. I'm glad he was right.

What I remember most was the preparation being unpleasant at best. I believe my urologist took 12 samples from different quandrants, IIRC. I didn't feel any pain but remember the clicking sound as each sample was taken. There was no rectal bleeding or discomfort; the biopsy was 9am and I was at work at 10:45am.

The urologist was candid about what to expect with blood discharge during urination and ejaculation. I had small amounts of blood in my urine for two weeks; first ejaculation was six days later; it too was dark colored (old blood I assumed).

My current primary doc continues to monitor my PSA every 6 months and it continues to slowly rise. Because the rise is not "sudden", no plans for another biopsy at this time. I will see the same urologist if necessary. While a biopsy is no walk in the park, I look at it as one of life's little unpleasantries.

Best wishes to you. Be well.

Thank you sir. Not sure I should be glad I could share, but I'm glad I could share my experience. :)

I remember it vividly as I was initially scheduled for the biopsy on inauguration day! I just wanted it over, but it was postponed one week due to crazy traffic/road closure expectations. I worked for the Federal Government then.

The day after inauguration all previous politicals were gone and there was an immediate repositioning of some career folks, including me. I was "promoted" to a Senior Executive position in which the incumbent had failed miserably but had survived the previous eight years because he knew someone who knew someone in the then-Bush administration. (happens in every administration regardless of party affiliation).

Anyway, because I was in a new job, I had to go to work. I was sweating the biopsy and the resultant impact on my ability to not only go to work but to function. I was thankful I made it through that day (ad the rest of that week) with minimal discomfort.

I'm retired now and don't miss that stupid damn 24 hour/7 day a week Blackberry!!!

Later post, I have complete retrograde ejaculation now but if anything orgasm is more intense. I don't know why. On the positive side. I can have a quick orgasm with no mess to clean up. I know some of you who enjoy your messes wouldn't like that but it's a different point of view. Recovery was not nearly as hard as I thought. As I said before know there are negative impacts to putting off action on enlarged prostate kidney wise.

Anyone else have any experience with BPH - benign prostatic hypertrophy?

BPH is actually Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, i.e. you get an increase in cell replication rather than an increase in the size of the cells. It's a common mistake. A prostate biopsy is now pretty common practice and the PSA is actually a pretty specific test and is usually raised before anything can be detected clinically. I'm sorry you found the experience uncomfortable but at least they're happy with the lump :) The fact that your prostate is enlarged actually makes your chances of prostate cancer substantially less. Though keep an eye out for lower urinary tract symptoms, fatigue, loss of appetite and weight loss. Many thanks for sharing your experience, i think this is a great forum for people to demystify mens health.

I had a prostate biopsy 5 years ago and I was out for the procedure. So I felt nothing and was just sore for about a week afterwards. I was negative which is a good thing and by having it I felt much better about myself. My PSA was greatly elevated and my prostate was quite large. It has since gone down and my numbers are back to normal. I still take a prostate medication every other day. It was great to be out of it when the procedure was actually done.
