I've been living with BPH for years now. I have regular satisfactory PSA tests and no reason to suspect serious cancer problems. But like a lot of men here, I get fed up with the symptoms we have to live with: nighttime disturbances, sometimes 4 or exceptionally more, but usually at least one. Poor flow rate, incomplete emptying, hesitation in starting. There is a temptation to dehydrate yourself in the evenings, but the medics tell me I mustn't do this - most heart attacks happen in the night hours, and thickening of the blood during dehydration won't help on that score.

When Flomax/Tamsulosin became OTC in the UK, I bought 3 months worth and set to with it. I quickly discovered the unexpected horrifying side effect of retrograde ejaculation- totally dry orgasms, and came off it immediately. Well now it's noticeable that the ejaculation strength and quantity is falling off steeply as, presumably, the prostate continues enlarging and the urine flow ever weakens.

Can anybody who is knowledgeable about our urology systems explain the retrograde ejaculation event? I've been trying to discover more why and exactly how it happens rather than simply a broad definition of what it is. I'm used to advanced system flow designs and would ideally like to see more advanced flow diagrams that I can understand from someone with a more advanced medical knowledge than I have, or a more comprehensive explanation than simply 'it's a blocked prostate'.

I believe I have detected that the advancement of prostate problems comes in jumps or definite stages rather than a steady progression- does anybody agree with this? I seem to go through worse effects, then it abates slightly for a few months, then advances again. Any comments? Also, I'm interested in what people who have had emergency treatment for complete urine flow blockage have to say? Was there a warning of the event? Any suspicion a serious problem was developing? A precursor stage where you might have thought something bad was definitely going on? Thanks for any comments!
