I think that there should be laws against harassment or "protesting" at funerals and all other funereal proceedings. If convicted, jail time and fines. Possibly, duress damages charged.

These people give conservatives and Christians bad name by distorting the beliefs of both to a level unintended by any who truly understand or promote either (same goes for many extremist conservative Christian groups; I do not use that term as lightly as many, however). They are not alone in that, and I hate people who do this because they give principled, rational members of each group a bad name.

Here in the States we have this wonderful thing called FREEDOM OF SPEECH and unfortunetaly the stupid and uneducated abuse this freedom greatly. This protest is just another example of a group of "christian" who follow a believe of "we are the only ones right and the rest of you are going to hell". They preach their garbage in arenas that get the most public spot light because everyone knows they are nuts and would ignore them in any other way of speaking. we would love to see them shot dead in the street more than here what garbage or lies they are saying.

I feel it totally stupid that they don't even have respect for a person to have a peaceful funeral. Heath was a fine actor and is talents will be missed.

I believe Ledger's family is bringing him home for the funeral.

Good luck pulling that shit in Perth... oh that's going to be fun.

:biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1: That's what I was just thinking. They'll each be shown the way back to the airport with a can of Swan Export shoved up their jacksie.

Ledger was an international star. Protesting at his funeral (what an odd concept) will only make those sick fuckers hated all over the world and make them be innundated with hate mail and threats, probably even death threats, from across the globe. These sick fuckers need to take refuge in a bunker somewhere -- and commit suicide.

I read somewhere that right-wingers are five times more likely to meet their spouses at church functions, than mainstream church goers. Does a ultra right-wing family church mean they are inbreeders?

i saw a documentary on them where the girls who are of breeding age claimed they would never get married because the end was near.

I know. They push it to the limit. I'm very conflicted, because I obviously support free speech -- but I can't help thinking that it would be great if someone would shut them up.

Did any of you hear of the case of the soldier's father who is suing them? They protested his son's funeral carrying signs "Fag Soldier in Hell." In their bizarre, skewed thinking (if you can call it that), they concoct the idea that God allows soldiers to be killed because the US allows gay rights, which apparently makes the soldier gay as well. Go figure. Anyway, the father of the soldier is suing them for the sign, saying it is defamation of character because they are implying that his son is gay. (Which makes me confused as to whose side I'm on; the one's who protest gay funerals, or the father who sues them and thereby implies that being gay defames character.)

Anyway, if they do go to Perth, I hope they get their asses kicked by the Australians. I always liked Australians.

These people come so dangerously close to perverting the concept of free speech it's frightening.

What does that mean?

Look free speech is free speech. Free speech isn't "say what you like as long as it isn't too hateful, or I disagree with it, or a congressman's mother disagrees with it, blah, blah, blah, blah..."

Their message is indisputably nasty and their choice of protesting at funerals is, to put it mildly, distasteful - I don't see anyone here saying otherwise. But if you deny these people their right to free speech then you have started closing a net that will draw tighter and tighter.

There is no sliding scale with free speech - it is all or nothing.

Whatever people have done in the past is just that, the past. You can think what you want but you never dishonor the dead. The way he died i know has his family and friends upset and how can they cope with all these idiots bad mouthing him. His funeral is not for non friends anyway. They need to do us and his family a favor and disagree from their own home.

Quietly.

Having been to one of their protests (see gallery), I have to say that they are the lamest, most unintimidating, useless group of people I've ever see. It doesn't mean that they aren't scum, but honestly I think if they didn't get as much press as they do, they'd be even more inneffective and more of a group of deranged loonies. I would be glad to stand with a signs against their hateful message anytime.

And, as DC said, they do abuse children.

Why hasn't Fred been beaten to a pulp yet, or been visited by a sniper?

Those who said that Fred and his group aren't the brightest bunch has it right. he once wanted to come picket at my church - not because of me, but because of another member who worked for a newspaper and wrote something he didn't like. Well, the paper got word that Fred & Co. were going to picket -- at the wrong church. So a group of us got on the phone with him in a conference call and said, "Fred, if you want to picket, here's where to be; leave those poor people alone." [Actually, he should have gone there -- he would have been received with open arms and, one hopes, at least would have been most confused.] Well, Fred just said that obviously the fags had gotten to us and we were trying to throw him off the scent. So we called the other church, apologized, and of course Fred & Co. showed up there. They came to our church the following week when the spotter he sent to our church (on the off chance that we fag-lovers just might have been telling the truth) duly noted that the target of the picketing was indeed there.

But all this free speech stuff really is a fine line. There are lots of people in this country (many who live near Fred, coincidentally) who think that we shouldn't be allowed to talk about big dicks online because a child might see it. Unfortunately, speech is pretty much all in the same boat - either everyone gets to talk or no one does. Or the worst: everyone gets to talk but only say what the government wants them to.

Dear god I hate these people. I saw an interview with this Fred character tonight on ACA, and not only did he say horrendous things about Heath, he also blabbered on about Australia. I was kinda laughing because he was so incomprehensibly ignorant in every way... Especially when he said his church had a big map of Australia and they had written "S O D O M" from border to border on it because we apparently send religious extremists to jail (shock, horror!) gah these people give me a headache! I feel for Heath's family who must be hearing all about these comments and just feeling heartbroken that people actually feel that way about their son...

He isn't worth the waste of the bullet.

Seriously though, what drives a cause better than a "living prophet"? A dead martyr. If someone killed this looney toon, you would see media circus extreme and a rise to his cause. People gravitate to those whose cause is "unjustly" persecuted and you better believe they would spin it that way. Abraham Lincoln, Medgar Evers, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Anwar Sadat, the list could go on. These men were killed not because people thought their cause was ridiculous, but because they knew these men would effect change and that scared them and they killed them so their causes would die out. Still they did not learn. Letting Phelps continue to show his ignorance like a man leaving the house without his pants on just proves he is insignificant. What "harm" does he really do? As has been stated, it's him and his inbreeds that are in this cult and they can spew their hate. Billions are opposed and the world knows this. A bullet in Phelps' head would make it a cause celeb. Want Westboro to grow? Shoot the man. Want it to die out? Let it do so by natural causes.

Good thinking - exactly why the IRA never took out Ian Paisley - his bigotted spewings did far more to show up him and his cause (or at least certain aspects of it), killing him would have given the rabid dogs a martyred figurehead.

Same with Phelps, but more extreme - who doesn't want to be on the 'other side' from that guy?

A hated person does not become a martyr. Jeffrey Dahmer is no martyr.
