A hated person does not become a martyr. Jeffrey Dahmer is no martyr.

A little off the mark my friend. Dahmer wasn't preaching a cause, he was killing and eating people. He was tried and convicted and murdered in prision.

For everyone that hates a man, there is someone who loves him. The white majority at that time hated Medgar Evers and Dr. Martin Luther King. Those people killed the men they "hated" and got millions more.

I think I know where you are going, but the problem with a Phelps killing is it would lend creedence to the arguement he actually IS having an effect. For every ten of us that hate him, there are at least two or three that love him. They are silent right now because he is looking like a fool. I say let the idiot keep roaming the village and eventually he will fall down the well without being pushed.

I would say that for every 100,000 people who hate him, one would love him. Even people who hate gay people would see the crime against human nature that involves picketing at funerals of dead soldiers (or of anyone).

Remember, he hates America as much as he hates "fags". The man has a mental illness, and his concept of God is of hate.

The news media would say how horrible it was if he were to be gunned down because that would be the politically correct thing to do, but they would say something else in private.

What does that mean?

Look free speech is free speech. Free speech isn't "say what you like as long as it isn't too hateful, or I disagree with it, or a congressman's mother disagrees with it, blah, blah, blah, blah..."

Their message is indisputably nasty and their choice of protesting at funerals is, to put it mildly, distasteful - I don't see anyone here saying otherwise. But if you deny these people their right to free speech then you have started closing a net that will draw tighter and tighter.

There is no sliding scale with free speech - it is all or nothing.

I totally agree with you, MB, and would have to defend these people's rights no matter how reprehensible they are just as I would in allowing Nazis to march in Skokie. But God, it's painful sometimes.
