An LPSG Exclusive:
From the Halls of Nassau's Parliament:
The Punch Up was a scandal that the press brought to
our attention on Sept. 27, 2006 via the newspapers.
Apparently after a meeting in the Cabinet Room on the
evening of Sept. 25 ,06 two MPs, Kenyatta Gibson and
Keod Smith, got into a fight after a heated exchange
of insults. The combat lasted for several minutes.
The PM and Deputy PM had already left before the
hostilities started.
During the scuffle it was reported that two windows
were smashed and the glass top of the large mahogany
table in the Cabinet room was broken. The Social
Services Minister, Melanie Griffin, was said to have
received a few stray blows as she tried to part the
two men. Many claimed that both men had bruised faces
after the incident. The dispute may or may not have
been about Government business.
Many Bahamians, via radio talk shows, condemned the
conduct of these men and the Primeminister too as he
stated that the incident was more "apparent than
real". Of course there were calls for the
resignation of the MPs for being bad examples to the
nation's youth. Kenyatta Gibson apologized publicly
for the so called "apparent" incident on Oct. 1, 2006.
Both of the men eventually resigned from their
Governmental positions. Keod Smith submitted his resignation Oct. 3rd and
Kenyatta Gibson's was turned in on Oct. 5th, effective on Oct. 9th.
The Office of the Prime Minister informed the Tribune newspaper
that the cost of the damage to the Cabinet Room was estimated at *$769.
The government's spokesperson also said that the
Government was already reimbursed for the cost of the
repairs by the two MPs.
