...This commercial is not "gay positive"...I would submit to you all that not only does this commercial not endorse same-sex couples, it does not even depict one. Rather, in a surprisingly sophisticated bit of visual rhetoric, the advertiser is suggesting that if a housewife (the primary target of advertising for home products, mind you) purchases this brand of mayonnaise, then her sandwiches will have the same appeal as those of the fabled New York delicatessens...

In spite of what I said earlier, I agree with your interpretation of the commercial, but I think the message went over most people's heads. People perceived it as an attempt to depict a same-sex couple (which doesn't make much sense really...why is the family British and why is a man called "Mum" and why would he be dressed like he works in a deli if he's in his own kitchen making lunch for his family?), hence homophobes complained about it while people who believe in gay inclusion are upset that the ad has been pulled.
