A jock strap's function is to turn me on...

Scott has it exactly right. They're there in order to look hot.

I've never bought that they support - they don't, and I'm a candidate for support (check out my pics - serious low-hangers). At least I've never felt "supported" in 'em.

And as for the 'keeps your balls from getting ripped off' in rough play justification - wouldn't having a pair of shorts on do pretty much the same thing?

Jocks are all about looking hot in a kind of a bondage-y way. No wonder 'coaches' always required them.

Required in high school, they were always a joke with the term "rank" attached to a used pair, probably because of not only ball sweat but because the fucking straps ride right up in your ass crack and we all know that real active teenage boys simply don't keep some areas of their bodies clean.

As far as protecting anything when hit with a baseball, football, etc., I never bought that because I was hit there and it hurt just as bad with the strap on. Of course, we did not have to wear the cup that pros put inside the strap.

Still, the strap up the crack was and still remains the most annoying part of a jock strap.

Apparently the USMC hasnt come into the 21st century since they issued me one 9actually 2) in boot camp. When I played sports in hs mostly we wore compression shorts which are better & more comfortable than a jockstrap. Except for wrestling where a jock strap or jock brief was required under garment.

I'm just surprised they're still as prevalent when such better more comfortable options are available like compression shorts.

I'm not sure the compression shorts really achieve the same level of support and they aren't very good for adding a cup in my experience. But...

Good for you for asking, Mastur (bate). I have had an obsession with jockstraps since i got my first school-issued one at age 11. To me, they say "athletic man" and the emphasis placed on a guys balls in that pouch really caught my eye and my sexual attention as a boy/adolescent. I'm not an ass man at all, so the appeal of the straps is lost on me, tho' I can conceptually understand it for those who are into asses. What I love about it is the fact that the pouch demands attention and forces you to look at a guy's equipment. Somehow, the ass straps add to all that. I like looking at strappedjocks.blogspot.com to see how the straps show under American football pants. In America, football is a religion, so a lot of guys ASSociate a traditional jockstrap with the manliness that is so important to boys growing up. I admit that there appears to be no practical advantage to having your ass exposed, but perhaps the tradition is too strong. That said, I believe jockstrap use in America is dying and will be obsolete in a few decades, which is a shame

Further, i do not find that compression shorts lift your balls the way they need it. They tend to press them down, which I don't like.
AND, you guys need to differentiate between wearing a jockstrap and wearing a cup. A jock alone will not protect your balls at all. The only function is to keep them somewhat bound up or supported so they don't sway. A cup , on the other hand, is there to prevent injury from impact.

Jockstraps rule.

I like to freeball as much as possible but I work in an office and wear dress pants so freeballing isn't always appropriate. The thin fabric of dress pants tends to leave little to the imagination. I have tried lots of different types of underwear but none are comfortable. The legs holes are almost always too small for my legs. If I get a bigger size, then the waist is too loose or they are just baggy and nasty. That leaves out bikinis, briefs, boxer briefs and compression pants. That just leaves boxers for under the dress pants. Typically after work, I head to the gym. I could keep the boxers on under my gym shorts but I also my wind up hanging out sometime. I always do some kind of cardio such as running on the treadmill, jump roping, or bike riding. All of these create a bouncing action that not only offends but causing chaffing. I tried wearing a jock and found it to be comfortable and effective. There are no tight leg holes to squeeze into and my ass is cool like freeballing. And for the non-US readers, most guys in the US don't wear jocks. It is not popular at the gym, there are only a few of us. Younger guys usually for the compression pants.

"And I still insist that the idea of knowing that some guy's ass is naked under his shorts means much more to you than really seems appropriate."

Listen here Bbucko, do not presume to know what I'm thinking, OK...? I'm not trying to pick a fight here, I honestly just want to know why a jockstrap looks like it does. I'm not American and therefore do not understand the 'cultural importance' of wearing something that I find peculiar. Just trying to understand the necessity of it not having material in the rear. Since the whole idea of underwear has always been that of hygiene and only later for support.

stupid thread where have you living under a rock? there is no cultural importance its an athletic supporter, like a fucking bra for balls. you'll find them all over the world.

here's everthing you could possibly want to know.

I ALWAYS wear a jock at the gym. As an older guy I got used to the fact that everyone wore one when I was in h.s. and college (and in the Air Force). At the small gym I go to now, I notice only one other guy (overwhelmingly straight, btw) who changes to a jock to work out. The younger men just keep on their street underwear - they seem afraid to get naked in a men's locker room - god forbid. But that's another thread.

I have ran in the Chicago Marathon twice. I learned that after running 10 or more miles in a given day (training) my balls would ache from the bouncing. If you where briefs, no matter how snug, your nutts are still bouncing. So for that reason, I still wear the good ol fashion jock - because as mentioned above, it keeps it all in place and you dont't suffer from the ball ache latter.

As of taking a hocky puck or softball or your buddies elbow in the nutts, wear a cup for contact sport. The only contact sport I play is softball and the cup is a must no matter how serious or non serious you are in your sport.

Once you find a jock or brand that you like, they fit like a glove and actually become pretty comfortable.

I second Prince Albert Dong. I wear a jock to exercise at the gym because without, I get sore. I don't like compression shorts because I don't like anything tight around my legs. I find support briefs uncomfortable and have not ever seen any regular briefs that give enough room and also provide enough support. Consequently finding a comfortable jock is why I came on lpsg because I tried Franklin jocks and they are made for Ken dolls, offer no room and are very uncomfortable. I like the Duke swimmer jock the best of anything I have tried. I have also been told Under Amour is good but I am too cheap so far to get them as they are more expensive. I also found through extensive research unlike women's bras jocks and cups do not come in different pouch sizes. Some brands are just cut larger so it is mostly trial and erro. When I was a pre-teen and in Karate, I simply wore an adult size cup. Now if I had to wear a cup, I don't know what I'd do. What do you hung athletes in contact sports do? I can't imagine a standard cup offering enough room for many of us here.

It's my understanding that the jockstrap was invented for when riding a bicycle on rough 19th century pavement. By not having fabric in the rear they do not pull back when in a seated position thus keeping the balls up and away from the bicycle seat. I haven't seen any young guys at the gym wear one in at least fifteen years. A few middle-aged and older guys do, mainly for cardio or basketball. I wear one on leg day because it seems to give me greater freedom of movement and thus better able to lift when doing squats.
