I saw it on Animal Planet. It's because there are entire genera more genetically diverse than Homo. Also, perhaps by classifying chimps as Homo, more philanthropists might become interested in their conservation.
Curiously, there was a Homo troglodytes in the original Systema Naturae, but they supposedly lived underground and were albino. (Made-up critters filled out the hominid family in pre-Darwinian days.)
