ALL respect USA naysayers
but
sooner share with the World, a 1000 boats down the Thames, in recognition & acknowledgement of a fine and giving person & Family, than helicopters following Oj or Mjs Funeral cortege, BIG difference ..

I'm going with some friends to the Jubilee Festival in Battersea Park which seems to be very tongue-in-cheek at it's attitude to Her Maj and the whole shenanigans.

Apart from being probably the best viewing area for the river pageant there's plenty else to see and do: DJs and live acts, fashion shows, Women's Institute cake displays, a classic-car boot sale, Queen Elizabeth lookey-likeys for you to practice royal portraiture on and a make-your-own souvenir stand where you can knit a corgi!

Sounds like a laff, Mark!

I didn't like the sound of the pageant when I first heard the idea, but I'm quite excited at the prospect now, haha. :p

Don't it just, Joll!

I thought it was a duff idea at first but it's looking like it might work out quite well. Better than a carriage ride down The Mall. More historically resonant and inclusive of the metropolis and its population.

I wouldn't be surprised if I get a lump in my throat when the first herald barge laiden with a belfry chimes it's way at the head of the procession, with riverside churches ringing out their replies.

Benign Monarch such as QEII or unelected President Brown?

Neither.

American here, we just don't get the monarchy. Ours was a nation built on a person's autonomy and it doesn't matter where you came from, you have a shot at wealth and success without having "blood lines."

I wish the UK was more like the USA. Social mobilty is immposible in Britain, a working class person can't become rich unless they win the lottery. The rich are kept rich and the poor are kept poor. It's disgusting really.

Oh fuck off, you boring cunt.

Charming.

We're a laughing stock due to the monarchy? Only all the way to the bank, as it generates so much interest and tourism.

Tourists come to see history (Henry VIII, etc), they don't come to see the current queen.

Lots of ppl I know are enjoying it + the impending Olympics, and why not?
People need a reason to celebrate sometimes - especially in these times of austerity.

It must just be the posh area's of London that are looking foward to it because the rest of the country couldn't care less.

You don't know anyone whose excited by this?? The police are expecting close a million extra people in London for starters,

It might be exciting for rich Londoners but why would a working class lad care about the royal family?

plus the tv coverage is fairly wall to wall for the next few days, which it wouldn't be if no one were interested.

They want people to interested because it distracts from the serious issuses like the economy, crime, NHS cuts, etc.

Plus I've never seen more Union Jacks flying from cars buildings

That's because of Euro 2012. Nothing to do with the Queen.

When people ponder will the monarchy end someday...I tend to think now. It costs bucks to support this family but the country has an individual to represent them and the money from ongoing tourists is huge. Really ties to their history and makes it ever present. As an Amercian, we want this so bad we take idiots and make them famous...our "royality" is our celebrity because of this need. I can't imagine living her lifestyle. But it works for them I guess. Cheers Beth.

Ryan let me explain you a simple thing, if the Uk was a 30 years old republic, you would still paying all the presidents that got passed into the HoS, becaming even more expensive to support than paying to just one HoS until the end of his/her life, Presidents are like Prime Ministers they came and go, they do mistakes and still get their benefits for being in those places, not to mention the dangerous relations that Presidents have with political parties, because they need political parties support so they could put the interests of the nation in the hands of those parties.

oh and about Union Flags on the cars flying being the cause of Euro 2012, I didnt know any United Kingdom team being present in the competition, I only know the England team which is not represented by the Union Flag but the St.George Flag ;)

The UK has been a laughing stock for years with the monarchy, isn't it time we dump them posh lot and get ourselves into the 21st century. Lets leave the 16th century behind, eh?
News to me.
You seem to like the American system much better ... and there's no reason why you shouldn't.
But, that said, the Americans happen to be among the most fascinated witnesses of the Queen each time she goes to the States.

Best to leave the potentially disastrous big ego position to someone with little power but the authority they earn IMHO.

Right on, old boi.

We're a laughing stock due to the monarchy? Only all the way to the bank, as it generates so much interest and tourism.

Good point, joll.
The world admires Elizabeth a great deal, and the idea of having an ancient monarchy still so functional in the 21st century is a source of fascination to many people.
(As an institution, it's functional. I don't mean the Royal Family has always been. They stumbled quite badly a few years back, but they seem to have found their way again. We shall see.)

I wish the UK was more like the USA. Social mobilty is immposible in Britain, a working class person can't become rich unless they win the lottery. The rich are kept rich and the poor are kept poor. It's disgusting really.

It's very well known that the American middle class has been suffering for decades.
Sure, there is more upward mobility in the States. But the disparity between the two nations is probably nowadays less than you think. Certainly far less than it was 30 or 40 years back.

Tourists come to see history (Henry VIII, etc), they don't come to see the current queen.

If the monarchy were abolished and the UK became just that much more like the rest of the world, there would be less fascination with your country.

[Flags] That's because of Euro 2012. Nothing to do with the Queen.

Huh? There's no team representing the United Kingdom as such in Euro 2012. Supporters of the England team (at least those who are in England) would surely be flying the Corss of St George in support of the team, not the Union flag?

Joll was quite wrong to insult you like that...

He missed out the work 'stupid'. You don't half spout a complete load of bollocks.

For reference with respect to costs: the civil list is given in exchange for ceding the income of the Crown Estates to the Treasury. The net income from The Queen is substantially more than is paid out (which is no longer tax exempt). So commenting on how much the civil list costs is an entirely spurious argument, usually peddled by the ignorant.

Better a constitutional monarch than an elected head of state any day.

& as for dim boy (Ryan10) up there - what is it that the US does so well for the poor? Is it their NHS services, social welfare, subsidised university system, or perhaps the freedom to carry a firearm, as that makes preparing for a bank robbery much more straightforward?

People will never realize how much the net value truly is brought in by the monarchy and all of the other attractions that surround it until they are gone. This is a very hard concept for people to grasp until they see their respective lively hoods vanish before their eyes.

I lived in a part of the US that had a local economy that was very much tied to an event that was steeped in tradition; when we lost the venue it had a domino affect that they still haven't recovered from to this day (now going on thirty years later).

Maybe, maybe not. Go to Vienna and I can demonstrate the opposite. No monarch and still tourism and fascination (try only the Spanische Hofreitschule).

Rubbish.

Tourists come to see a country with a rich history and a current, functioning monarchy. It's an anachronism and as such it's fascinating to ppl such as Americans. It also adds a huge sense of gravitas and occasion that we'd otherwise lack.

I haven't got a clue about the posh areas of London - as lower middle-class myself, I can only speak for what I see in Wales and NW England, where I reside.

The flags have nothing to do with Euro 2012. They're due to a AAA combo of Jubilee and Olympics. Last time there were flags out round here was for the Golden Jubilee (a mixture of Welsh flags and Union Jacks - displayed alongside each other).

Don't it just, Joll!

Me too!
It's pissing down tho - but nevermind, just makes it more British.

Long to rain over us! haha. :biggrin1:
