Question about membership

Hi all, I'm new to this site. I'm a bit confused though. I wanted to upgrade to gold status so I payed for a one month membership to start out. After paying I didn't see any upgrade. I payed again thinking it didn't go through. Now I'm showing two charges and I'm still not a gold member. Am I missing something here? Is there a waiting period? Any help would be apreciated.
